Machine vision and image processing are essential in research that develops applications for human-machine interaction, human and emotion recognition, and user-centric services in cities, traffic, homes, Internet, social networks and virtual realities.

One of the key accomplishments of the Machine Vision Group is the method of Locar Binary Pattern and facial recognition based on it. It is one of the most cited Finnish ICT research results in the world. Microexpression recognition, also developed in Oulu, and used for recognizing hidden emotions, is also internationally significant. Methods to detect face spoofing have also received accolades from the international scientific community as well as application developers.
