Visiting Lecture on Smart Grid - Challenges and Opportunities

The Smart Grid transition of energy networks is underway the world over. It is expected to create new business opportunities in communication, IT and manufacturing sectors in addition to energy sector. With provisions to accommodate distributed and renewable generation, Smart Grid is expected to transforms today’s passive consumers to active prosumers in dynamic energy markets. In this presentation, a brief introduction to Smart Grid, some technical challenges associated with Smart Grid transition and opportunities available in Smart Grid will be discussed.

Short Bio:
Kithsiri Liyanage obtained B.Sc.Eng from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1983, M.Eng. and Dr.Eng. from University of Tokyo in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He has held visiting positions at the University of Tokyo, Japan, University of Washington, USA, University Durham UK, and
University Oulu, Finland. He has co-authored the book, Smart Grid: Technology and Applications, published in 2012. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of University of Peradeniya. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
