Md Abu Nayeem has a passion for education. Having earned a Master's degree in education in 2019 from the University of Dhaka, the largest university in Bangladesh, he worked with primary school teachers at a training institute for a year and a half.

After that, he spent another six months in a humanitarian setting at a non-governmental organisation to promote access to education for children with disabilities.

“After those experiences, I was really motivated to search for higher education and the Finnish education system is highly regarded. I was really interested in how primary education works here, with its self-driving and student-centered approach. I am also keenly interested in social justice and other sociological aspects of education”, Nayeem says.

Landing in Oulu

Nayeem felt that the University of Oulu's Education and Globalisation Master's programme would be an excellent fit for him and so he decided to apply. Due to various bureaucratic delays, he wasn't able to come to Oulu until late in the semester.

“Everyone was very understanding about my situation and very flexible, the staff and teachers as well as my fellow students, which was an amazing thing. I was able to participate online and everyone was always very eager to get also my input”, Nayeem says.

Coming from one of the most densely populated places on Earth, Nayeem says he was struck by the space and lack of crowds in Oulu.

Nayeem is one of the Finland Scholarship recipients for 2022. He says that he had other choices when deciding where to go further his education, but he says the programme was very appealing to him and the relocation grant was a great incentive.
