From Ceylon to Oulu City Hall: My internship journey to the city of Oulu
I applied for the internship at the City of Oulu because I wanted to learn more about cross-border cooperation and sustainability. My interview was held at the University of Oulu, and to my surprise, it was warm and personal, no big folder of certificates needed! In Finland, I realized, what truly matters is attitude, skills, curiosity, and the willingness to learn. When my supervisor ended the meeting with, “Welcome to the team,” I felt pure happiness and gratitude.
Working inside the magical City Hall
Walking into Oulu City Hall every morning felt special. The building carries proud history, beautiful architecture and the atmosphere was calm and welcoming. My days were filled with creative tasks from writing and media analysis to planning events and connecting with municipalities.
Flexibility was a key part of work life: I could choose to work from the office or from home. That freedom, combined with trust and support, made me feel motivated and valued.
Field visits and the beauty of the border region
The Bothnian Arc connects the northern coastal regions of Finland and Sweden, building cooperation in education, transportation, culture, and sustainability. Learning about it opened my eyes to how people and projects can work across borders to solve shared challenges. My curiosity grew each day as I saw how teamwork, communication, and trust make collaboration truly work.
During field trips to Kemi, Tornio, Haparanda, Kalix, Piteå, and Luleå, we interviewed mayors, gathered stories, and learned how communities live close to water the sea and rivers that connect us. One highlight was the Pelasta Perämeri (Save the Bothnian Bay) event, full of joy, music, children’s workshops, and digital water projects a true celebration of sustainability and togetherness.
The secret ingredient of Finnish work life: Coffee!
Back home in Sri Lanka, we have one long lunch break but here, coffee breaks are almost a tradition! They’re small moments to pause, talk, and laugh with colleagues. These breaks taught me that well-being isn’t just a benefit in Finland, it’s a part of the culture. Every day ended with a peaceful feeling productive yet balanced.
Lessons and gratitude
This internship taught me the value of teamwork in a multicultural environment, flexibility, and kindness. I learned that trust and balance create happier, more creative workplaces.
I’m deeply thankful to my supervisor, for her constant support and encouragement. As I continue my studies this autumn, I carry these lessons and the warm memories from Oulu City Hall - with me.
