Mentoring programme schedule

If you are going to apply to the program, mark the important dates on your calendar already, and check them once more later. 

Before applying, please note that joint meetings and one-to-one mentoring meetings may be carried out in part online. 

Please provide a valid e-mail address in the application, as any contact with applicants and selected participants during the programme will take place via that e-mail. 

1) Application period for the programme
mentors and mentees (students) 16.8.–31.10. by 4 pm.

Deadline for carefully completed applications is during 16.8.–31.10. (4 pm.)

2) Group discussion sessions for mentees (students) Wed 2.11., Thu 3.11., and Fri 4.11.

• Students applying to the program must participate in one discussion session of their choice. In the session we will explain the idea of the mentoring programme and after that the participants will be divided into group discussion. The idea is to discuss others about the motivation and reasons for applying to the programme (you can use your application as a reference). We kindly ask you to prioritize this event over possible overlapping commitments because it’s a mandatory event in order to proceed in the application process. The events might be held also remotely depending on the pandemic situation. 
• It is necessary to register for the discussion session in advance and applicants must come to one of the sessions of their choice. You will receive a link to register to the event after sending your application. 
• The group discussions will be held in English and in Finnish. The language is indicated in the schedule below.
• Materials are distributed in Finnish and English. 
• Be prepared to show with your Student ID card that you have enrolled to the University of Oulu for the academic year 2022–2023 at the beginning of the event. In the case of a online event we will check the right to study and enrollment in other ways in advance.

• Fri 4.11. at 15–16, Location: Stage (Kontinkangas campus), language: Finnish / English

3) Matching process of the mentoring pairs 7.11.–11.11.

Program leaders will match suitable mentoring pairs for this term. In the meantime, be prepared to provide additional information related to your application, either by e-mail or telephone, if necessary. 

4) Confirmation regarding the selections mentors and mentees (students) Fri 11.11.2022

We will announce at the latest on Friday 11.11. by 4pm regarding the selections for both students and mentors by email. We strive to find the most suitable pairs for all applicants, both mentors and students (mentees). However, it is possible that we will not find a match for all applicants, as each year the number of applicants and their backgrounds and aspirations vary.

5) Orientation for students (mentees) Q&A, Thu 17.11.

The orientation will be held on Thu 17.11. 16-17 at Tellus Stage, Linnanmaa.

Workshop where students can practice how to prepare for a mentoring meeting and what to discuss with their mentor.  Participants have the opportunity to ask questions. The students start to prepare their mentoring plan. All selected students should participate in the training.

6) Return of the mentoring plan to Moodle 23.11. (students)

The plan will be introduced more detailled in the orientation on 17.11. 

7) Mentoring meetings 11/2022–04/2023

* Joint kick-off meeting (mentees & mentors) THU 24.11.2022 at 16.30–19.00 (L2, Linnanmaa campus map C7)

The meeting will start with a orientation for mentors at 16.30. In the meeting we will go through the basic principles of mentoring, frequently asked questions, tips and share the agenda for the first meeting. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions. It is highly recommended that at least the new mentors participate in the training.

The students (mentees) join at about 17.15. The meeting will continue with a joint meeting for mentors and mentees. The agenda will published later. The mentor-mentee pairs will be announced for the first time at this meeting.

* Pop up meeting (students) THU 8.12.2022 at 14–15, YT101 Career Centre, Linnanmaa

* Pop up meeting (students) WED 15.3.2023 at 14–15, YT101 Career Centre, Linnanmaa
