The University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship programme at the Lumo Art & Tech Festival

The University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship programme showcases future technologies through three research demonstrations. Connected Robots and the Future of 6G illustrates how next-generation wireless networks can enable collaboration and real-time communication between connected robotic systems. More Than Light demonstrates how light can serve as a medium for communication, sensing, and energy transfer in intelligent environments. Can AI Beat the Finnish Winter? Predicting Train Delays from the Weather in Finland presents how weather data and artificial intelligence can be used to anticipate disruptions in rail transport.

The University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship programme’s three research demonstrations can be experienced on Thursday, 19 November, at the Tarkastamo Club Stage.

Demo: Connected Robots and the Future of 6G

Discover how next-generation wireless networks can support intelligent robotic systems: Robots are becoming an important part of future industries, logistics, healthcare, and everyday environments. To work effectively, they need reliable connections for exchanging information, coordinating actions, and interacting with people and other machines.

This demonstration explores how emerging 6G technologies may help enable connected robotic systems. Visitors will see how advanced wireless connectivity can support communication between robots, sensors, and digital services, creating opportunities for more adaptive, coordinated, and intelligent operations. The demo offers a glimpse into a future where physical and digital systems work together through next-generation networks.

Research supported by 6G Flagship and University of Oulu.

Demo: More Than Light

Discover how light communicates, powers, senses, and connects: More Than Light explores how light is evolving from a source of illumination into a platform for communication, sensing, and energy transfer. Through a series of live demonstrations, visitors will experience how future lighting systems can connect devices, support sustainable IoT, wirelessly power tiny implants, and enable intelligent environments that interact with the world around them.

Research supported by 6G Flagship, EU SNS Project SUPERIOT, Business Finland WiseCom and Infotech Oulu.

Demo: Can AI Beat the Finnish Winter? Predicting Train Delays from the Weather in Finland

Every Finn knows the feeling: a heavy snowfall arrives, the temperature drops to minus twenty, and the train is late again. But what if we could see those delays coming? This demo shows how artificial intelligence can learn from the Finnish winter. We combined years of Finnish railway records, about 38 million data points, with observations from roughly 200 weather stations of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Instead of feeding the model raw numbers, we taught it to recognize conditions the way a railway operator would: blizzard, heavy snow, freezing rain, extreme cold. The result is a model that estimates train delays across Finland. Visitors can explore Finland's railway network on an interactive map, see how delays peak in the darkest winter months, and discover which weather conditions hit the trains hardest.

The work is part of the ENSURE-6G project at the University of Oulu and the 6G Flagship programme, and shows how we can make transport in the North smarter and more reliable.
