Do you need or want to learn the basics of bioinformatics and data analysis and apply those skills in practice for biomedical data? Join our courses! The course is meant for everyone interested in the theory and application of bioinformatics and data analysis methods to biomedical data. The courses of training module are web-based, self-directed and can be completed according to participant’s own timetable.

Education information

This 25 ECTS course set consists of an introductory, two theoretical courses, two practical courses and a final training project.

The courses are recommended to be completed at the following order:

  • Introduction and learning tools to the continuous education in bioinformatics and data analysis, 1 ECTS
  • Data models and methods, module 1, 3 ECTS
  • Data analysis in practice, module 1, 3 ECTS
  • Data models and methods, module 2, 5 ECTS
  • Data analysis in practice, module 2, 3 ECTS
  • Training project in bioinformatics and data analysis part 1, 5 ECTS
  • Training project in bioinformatics and data analysis part 2, 5 ECTS

In case the applicant/student does not have some previous knowledge or skills, additional courses from bioinformatics minor from FBMM can be taken:

  • Bio-data, 5 ECTS
  • Data mining and data-based models, 5 ECTS
  • Elementary Programming, 5 ECTS

  • Mathematics for biomedical data analysis, 5 ECTS

The content of training module includes:

  • Preprocessing and finding biomedical data, construct and answer relevant questions.
  • Different data analysis methods related to machine learning and neural networks and their requirements and limitations.
  • Programming language R and software tools Keras, Tensorboard and Galaxy.

The studies are free of charge (funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture).

Registration for the training module is submitted by applying for non-degree study right. The application is submitted in e-Forms (Electronic forms of the University of Oulu).

  • Register for the training module by clicking ”Apply for non-degree study right” at the top of the page.
  • The link redirects you to the main page of e-Forms. You can log in with identification.
  • After logging in to e-Forms, click form "7. JOY_Application for non-degree studies". Note that there are two forms for non-degree studies: select number 7 with JOY prefix!
  • Fill in "Personal data".
  • In "Study right" section, write both Bioinformatics and data analysis training module and Minor in Bioinformatics to separate "Course or study module name" fields. Notice that only the name of the training module is required, please do not specify which courses you want to take! Also leave "Course or study module code" and "Credits" fields blank.
  • The required attachments for the application are
    • CV
    • Degree certificate/s
    • Motivation letter ( ½ - 1 page, where you describe 1. previous work experience, education, trainings etc. related to the training, and 2. how you will utilize the new knowledge and skills gained during the training)
  • In the Workflow section at the bottom of the page, please select Eija Jussila as a “Next assignee”.

The applications arrived in July will be processed in August due to the summer holidays. The processing time of application is about 2 weeks. You are informed of a granted non-degree study right through e-mail. The study right is marked to the student registry, and you will receive University of Oulu user account information once your studies begin.
