Graduation: Master's degree
Studies leading to the master’s degree may include basic, subject and advanced studies, language and communication studies, interdisciplinary study projects, optional courses and internship improving expertise. The degree includes also a Master’s thesis (20 – 40 ECTS), which is a research project prepared in the last studying year.
Graduation
Once all the required courses have been completed and added in the study register, you may apply for the degree certificate in Peppi's Graduation -service. Remember to check your faculty’s schedule for graduations and register for Maturity Test.
When you are about to graduate, please check out in good time that your studies (your PSP in Peppi) and credits are there. After that, apply for degree certificate, diploma, in Peppi’s Graduation -service.
There are two phases in Graduation -service:
- reviewing
- finalizing.
In this first phase you will proceed straight to the degree certificate application, which is also the checking list for graduation. After you have sent your application, the officer will review your studies, your PSP in Peppi and credits. After that you get notification that you can send your application to be finalized.
In finalizing phase all information related to graduation will be reviewed and graduation date confirmed. After all your information has been processed, you get notification of the acceptance and confirmation of the graduation date.
When your are applying for degree certificate at Peppi, you can apply for complementary study right also there.
N.B.! Students who graduate 2022/08/01 or later will receive the official degree certificate as Electronic degree certificate. In addition they will receive a paper copy of the degree certificate. Read further instructions by clicking the link below. Students who graduated before 1st of August will receive the official degree certificate as a paper version from the Academic Affairs Service Team.

Applying for the degree
The degree certificate application is completed in the Peppi Graduation -service (check the general info above, on top of the page).
Begin the graduation related process, such as making sure your PSP is up to date, in good time before the official graduation date. If necessary, please contact your Faculty academic affairs team for assistance (study.education@oulu.fi).
Remember the following:
- FEP students PSP’s do not need to be “approved” in Peppi. However, it is good to go through the HOPS with a tutor teacher/education designer prior to graduation to make sure the PSP is up to date.
- Studies (such as minor studies or elective studies) have to be correctly placed on the PSP before beginning the graduation process.
- Studies which will not be included in the degree can be left in the section “External studies module”
Delivering the degree certificate
An electronic degree certificate has been in use at the University of Oulu since 1.8.2022.
Graduates will receive an automatic message from the address noreply@oulu.fi when the diploma can be downloaded in the Atomi service.
Diploma Conferment Ceremony
The Diploma Conferment Ceremony will be organized at the Faculty of Education and Psychology max. two times per academic year.
The exact times and other details of the ceremonies will always be informed separately.
The student must always register for the ceremony separately. The registration made via Peppi graduation application is not enough.

The delivery time of the certificate is a maximum of two weeks from the date of graduation. During holidays and peak times, the delivery time may be longer, but a maximum of four weeks.

Faculty of Humanities
Students who have completed all the studies required for the Master's degree should apply for the degree certificate in Peppi's Graduation Service.
Graduating students can take part in the official graduation ceremony (publiikki), where diplomas are distributed to the graduates. The ceremony is public and a graduating student may invite two guests along.
Graduation ceremonies are held twice a year, on December and June.

Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine
How to graduate from the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine
(For PhD Diplomas, See: University of Oulu Graduate School)
The graduation date is always the last day of the month (including July 31), except December, when the graduation date is also the day of graduation event (Publiikki).
To get your diploma ready in good time. Please follow the steps below:
- Update your PSP in Peppi and check that all courses you are going to include in the degree are listed in the same study right (Bachelor or Master). If needed, Faculty study affairs is able to move studies from one study right to another. If something is missing contact the relevant Faculty Study Affairs (in FBMM kaisa.tuominen@oulu.fi). You can find contact information of the Faculty Study Affairs here. When all studies are included, agree graduation discussion with Jari Heikkinen.
- Request evaluation of the minor subjects from the Academic Affairs Service Teams of the faculty where you have taken the minor subject. When requesting evaluation, title your message e.g. "Evaluation of the study module/chemistry". Add your student number, degree program and information about which studies you want to combine in the message.
- Ensure that all studies required for that degree have been completed in accordance with an approved Curriculum. All courses and minors must be in the register at the latest two weeks before graduation day, otherwise graduation will be delayed. Major subject (biochemistry) and language studies will be compiled in FBMM.
- Fill in the application for degree certificate in Peppi's Graduation -service at least seven days before the date of graduation. When filling the degree application, please note: FBMM only organizes graduation event (Publiikki) at the end of semesters. You can invite max. 2 guests. An invitation will be sent to everyone who graduates after the previous graduation event and on the day of the graduation event. The next graduation ceremony (Publiikki) will be held on the Kontinkangas campus on Monday 18 December 2023.
The delivery time for the certificate is usually two weeks after graduation but may be longer for peak and holiday periods.
Graduation events are organized in the last graduation day of the semester. All students that have graduated at that semester are welcome to the graduation event. Kaisa Tuominen will send a special invitation to students graduating on graduation event day or before.
NOTE the student financial aid regulations, if you take your certificate before 18th of the month.
You can only be awarded one diploma at a time. This means you cannot receive a diploma for your Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree on the same date. You have to submit two different diploma applications for the two degrees on two different dates. Same applies for the PhL degree. If the diploma application or its attachments are incomplete, the awarding of the diploma may moved to a later date.
Faculty of Science
You can only be awarded one diploma at a time. This means you cannot receive a diploma for your Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree on the same date. You have to submit two different diploma applications for the two degrees on two different dates. Same applies for the PhL degree. Graduation timetable is different for doctoral students. However, they also need to apply for the diploma.
You need to apply for the degree at latest seven days before the end of the month. The graduation day will be last day of the month. Hence, you will receive the diploma within two weeks after the graduation (exception holiday seasons, rush periods).
The completed study modules in major and minor subjects must be packaged properly before a diploma can be awarded. Please ask the packaking of your minor studies before filling the application the diploma. The packaking of the minor studies should be asked from the faculty in which you did that minor. Please tell your name (firstname and lastname), student number, major subject and the minor need to packaking. After that you can fill out the electronic application for degree certificate in e-Services.
You can pick up the degree certificate from Compass Service Point (G corridor).

Electronics and Communications Engineering
Essential points in the graduation process:

- Maturity test related to the MSc degree 521011S is first agreed with the thesis supervisor and the maturity test can be taken in the examinarium.
- The degree certificate application is submitted in Peppi.
- Please see the final deadlines for submitting a degree certificate application in the timetable below (please see the column "Submitting Application"). Your application will be processed by the day of the diploma conferment ceremony and you shouldn't be alarmed if your application isn't finalized on the day of the graduation. You will be contacted by the academic affairs service team if additional information is needed or if there would be any other reason you wouldn't be graduating on the date set on your application.

Other Tasks When the Thesis Is Ready
You also need to attend the maturity test, and return all university library books, as well as keys, equipment, machinery, and tools belonging to the university.
The last event in your M.Sc. studies is the graduation ceremony (Publiikki) where you will receive the degree certificate. You are supposed to dress formal black and you can have two guests. You will get an Alumni Pin. You can register for the ceremony while applying for a degree in Peppi´s graduation system.

Archeology
Archeology: Master’s seminar and Master's thesis
A student with archaeology as their major should start the Master’s seminar and the drafting of their Master’s thesis immediately after having finished their Bachelor’s thesis, i.e. in the autumn of their fourth year of studies. Most of the seminar sessions are arranged at the end of each term: November and December as well as April and May. To successfully complete the course, you must actively attend the sessions.

Graduation schedule for degree students
In order to graduate, you have to apply for the degree certificate. At first, contact Academic Affairs (study.business (at)oulu.fi) about one month in prior to the graduation. Academic affairs service team can check your studies to make sure you have completed all the required courses, that are needed to graduate. Also, academic affairs will send you a link to fill out the online questionnaire for recent Master of Science graduates.
After that you can fill out the electronic application for degree certificate by using Peppi system. Degree certificates will be awarded in Oulu Business School’s graduation events. Please remember to register also for the graduation event, when you fill out the electronic application for degree certificate.

The University of Oulu uses the Diploma Supplement. The Diploma Supplement is produced by higher education institutions according to standards agreed by the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO. The Diploma Supplement is also part of the Europass framework transparency tools. It provides additional information to the official degrees and transcript, making it more easily understood especially by employers or institutions outside Finland.

1. Personal study plan (PSP) accepted
Contact PSP advisor Eveliina Seppälä (eveliina.seppala[at]oulu.fi OR her substitute*) for finalizing your PSP and compilation of your studies for degree application.
2. Thesis reviewed by supervisors and modified by student
When the thesis is ready, it is reviewed by the supervisors and modified by the student when necessary.
3. Thesis to Laturi
Once the university supervisor has approved the thesis as completed and gives permission, student uploads completed thesis to the Laturi system.

4. Thesis evaluation by examiners
The examiners retrieve the thesis from the Laturi and evaluate it.
5. Degree Programme Committee Meeting reviews and accepts the grade
Student gets the accepted evaluation by email after the meeting.
6. Maturity test accepted and saved to register
7. All studies registered in PEPPI
Student checks that the studies accepted in PSP have been completed and saved in PEPPI.

You also need to attend the maturity test, and return all university library books, as well as keys, equipment, machinery, and tools belonging to the university.
The last event in your M.Sc. studies is the graduation ceremony (Publiikki) where you will receive the degree certificate. You are supposed to dress formal black and you can have two guests. You will get an Alumni Pin. You can register for the ceremony while applying for a degree in Peppi's graduation system.

Graduates can participate a Diploma Conferment Ceremony that follows the graduation day. What to consider before graduation?
1. Check your PSP (no later than 2 months before graduation, preferably before starting the Master’s thesis)
Make sure that the studies attached to your PSP correspond to the studies to be included in your degree. If there have been any changes to your studies since the last approved PSP, make the changes and approve your PSP by your tutor teacher.
2. Make a diploma application in Peppi's Graduation service (no later than one week before the graduation date, which is always the last day of the month)
At this stage, the study credits in accordance with the approved PSP must be registered in Peppi, including the Master’s thesis and the maturity test.
If your diploma application needs to be supplemented, you will be contacted by Academic Affairs Service Point. Your degree will appear compiled in Peppi on the day of the graduation (exceptions on 31th of July and 31th of December).

Master’s theses must be uploaded to the Laturi system no later than the Wednesday before the Degree Programme Committee meeting.

Once your thesis is ready to be evaluated, your thesis supervisor will give approval for your thesis to be uploaded in the LATURI system of the University of Oulu Library.
The application for diploma thesis subject has to be submitted by email to study.architecture@oulu.fi to be approved a by the Study Progam Committee of the Oulu School of Architecture at the latest during the preceding week of the date of the committee meeting , which in the spring semester 2024 will be held on the following Mondays: 22.1./ 22.2. / 25.3. / 25.4. / 27.5. 2024

Steps and timetable for graduation for academic year 2023-24
1. Thesis approved by supervisors
- Student and supervisors agree together that the thesis is ready for the revision process.
- After this step, the student can no longer make any modifications.
- Student submits the thesis for reviewing process in Laturi system.
- After this stage, the student updates the personal study plan (PSP) in Peppi and checks that all courses are listed in it.
2. Thesis evaluation by examiners
- The examiners retrieve the thesis from the Laturi and evaluate it.
- The examiners submit a statement in three weeks´ time from the date of the submission.
3. Degree Programme Committee (DPC) Meeting
- The degree programme committee accepts the grade. The student gets the accepted evaluation by email after the meeting.
- If the student is not satisfied with the evaluation, there is 14 days to appeal.
4. Maturity test accepted and saved to register
- Summary of the thesis is accepted as a Maturity test.
- Education Assistant of the Academic Affairs service team will get the information about completed thesis from the Laturi system and will record also the maturity test as completed in Peppi.
5. Applying for a degree certificate in Peppi´s graduation service
- The student will check that all the courses have been included in the transcript of records and applies for a degree certificate/diploma in Peppi´s graduation service.
- The student must fill in the application for degree certificate at least seven (7) days before the date of graduation, which is every month´s last day.
- There are two phases in the Peppi´s graduation service:
- reviewing
- finalizing
- In the first phase the student will proceed straight to the degree certificate application, which is also the checklist for graduation. After sending the application, the officer will review the studies, Personal Study Plan in Peppi, and credits. After that the student will get a notification that he/she can send application to be finalized.
- In the finalizing phase all information related to graduation will be reviewed and graduation date confirmed. After all information has been processed, the student will get a notification of acceptance and confirmation of the graduation date.
6. Graduation
- The Faculty of Medicine grants the degree.
- The official degree certificate is an electronic degree certificate that student will download from Peppi´s Atomi service for free. It is highly recommended to upload the certificate as soon as available since your university account will expire soon after graduation and after that you will not have access to Peppi anymore.

- Students, who will participate in Graduation Ceremony on 31st of May, 2024, will receive a paper copy of the degree certificate. Certificates will not be sent by post, and they cannot be retrieved from academic affairs´ service points. The only way to receive a paper copy of the certificate is to attend the graduation ceremony.
