Want to be an Epidemiologist and Data Scientist together?

The Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science (EBDS) programme teach how Health and Disease patterns incorporate Data Science. Isn't that sound exciting? But don't know-how! Hold on tight; let me give you a deeper but light understanding of a super career-friendly programme offered by the University of Oulu.

A little bit of background!

Epidemiology is the science of gathering and analysing information about the disease distribution, patterns, and determinants of health conditions in a specific population. It is a cornerstone of public health and shapes health policy decisions, and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare.

On the other hand, Biomedical Data Science covers a range of data-intensive biological and medical research. The Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science (EBDS) programme include both concepts.

We are shaping the unhealthy world!

No country had been spared from the vicious claw of this Covid-19 pandemic.

Amid this pandemic, everyone's eye was on epidemiologists' comments, and there was a high demand grown-up for epidemiologists in the career market.

The critical role of epidemiologists during the COVID-19 pandemic is to estimate the burden of disease and the impact of other health outcomes on a population.

Epidemiologists collect data from the COVID-19 studies and analyse these data to estimate critical outcomes, such as the number of infections, illnesses, medical visits, hospitalisations, and deaths. But, to process, manage and interpret the collected data, epidemiologists need the help of data scientists. So, keeping these in mind, the University of Oulu came along to develop the EBDS programme.

How will EBDS progress your career?

EBDS programme curriculum has a solid connection to the research conducted in the field of epidemiology and data science at the Faculty of Medicine and other technological faculties. The programme is also built around various real-life-based modules: molecular, life-course, and clinical epidemiology, as well as statistical methods in epidemiology, data management, and ethics.

This programme will enable you to focus on creating novel methodologies or tools to advance biomedical science discovery. This course will also allow you to create coherent reports and peer-reviewed papers based on research and analysis of raw data.

The master's programme in EBDS at the University of Oulu will teach you how to operate as an epidemiologist and data science researcher with a practical approach to epidemiological research design. The hosting research units responsible for organising the EBDS education are recognised internationally by incorporating wide-ranging international lectures and research collaborations.

The degree programme in EBDS is implemented in an internationally recognised high-quality research environment, and the student will develop their final projects with a close link to H2020 projects, which makes this course career friendly.

Moreover, the University of Oulu offers a scholarship program that grants 75% scholarships for international students. In this way, the University of Oulu and EBDS will give you unique and diverse opportunities to study and flourish your career by giving you valuable experience abroad.
