Applicants are asked to demonstrate their Finnish language skills in the admission process. Read more about language requirements here (in Finnish).

Biochemistry is the study of life at the molecular level. It is the primary basis of the biotechnology industry and of fundamental importance to the pharmaceutical industry. In the post genomic era, advances in molecular biosciences are resulting in many strong areas of economic growth. There is an urgent need for researchers and experts in the field. Within the field of biochemistry the focus of research at the faculty is in the molecular level understanding of human health and disease and the rational design of drugs and other intervention therapies to promote wellbeing.

The mission of the faculty is to deliver current high level teaching, with the understanding that this cannot be given without parallel international level research. All of our teachers are active in research and all of our researchers are active in teaching.

The faculty has dynamic, well-funded, international-level research and excellent state of the art infrastructure. The strength in protein science and molecular medicine in the faculty has been systematically developed by the recruitment of experts from Finland and abroad. The working language of the faculty is English and all MSc and PhD level courses are taught in English.

The BSc study line in Biochemistry offers a structured solid grounding in the core subject area, covering the full breadth of the subject area while the highly flexible MSc study line in Protein Science and Biotechnology and in Molecular Medicine have been planned around the early integration of MSc students into research groups and the use by individual students of the most modern equipment. For example, before the end of the first term students in Protein Science and Biotechnology will have individual hands on experience of electrospray mass spectrometry, sub-second kinetics by stopped-flow and quenched-flow, fluorescence, circular dichroism, microcalorimetry and surface plasmon resonance.

All study lines also offer flexibility to allow students to specialize in those aspects of the field which they believe will most benefit their future career.

Many of our alumni are full professors around the world, while others are assistant professors or group leaders in academia and industry. 80% of the graduates from the international MSc have gone onto do PhDs.

The University of Oulu is constantly ranked in the top 500 Universities in the world. It has a dedicated international office to help support the needs of foreign students, while all students are eligible for places in PSOAS student accommodation near the main campus.
