If students wish to temporarily suspend their studies, they register with the University as an absent student. Students may register again as a present student even during the academic year. Notice also statutes concerning Duration of degree.
There has been a change in the Unemployment Security Act, effectively 1.1.2013. According to the new law, student are no longer eligible to receive unemployment security based on the fact that they have suspended their studies for minimum of one year.
When university student's studies have ended, they are eligible to receive unemployment security. University studies have ended in following cases:
- student has graduated or
- students right to complete a degree is not valid or
- studies have been suspended for at least a year. A report from the University of Oulu is required stating that student has not received any credit in at least a year (transcript of records), nor has the student taken part in teaching, or prepared e.g. final thesis under supervision. This replaces former procedure, where student could use a university issued certificate to proof they have suspended studies for at least a year.
