The conference website and registration is now open

Oovtâst - Together. Saami research new concepts, theories and methods-conference will be held 25th- 27th September 2013 in Inari, Finland.

Because of great interest to the Conference in Saami Studies there was extended deadline for “Call of abstracts” in this spring. Now 80 abstracts are approved to be part of conference program. Conference will be an inspiring meeting point for researchers, local people and other participants interested in Saami studies, says behalf of Organising Committee Veli-Pekka Lehtola,Professor of Saami culture at the Giellagas Institute , University of Oulu, Finland.

In recent decades Saami research has gone to new directions and become more multivoiced. The aim of the conference is to chart this new multivoiced research and to find out at what point Saami studies are today and what are the main questions, new thoughts, and directions at the present. Oovtâst will offer a multidisciplinary venue for finding new methodological, conceptual and epistemological approaches to Saami studies.

The aim of the conference is to move from the earlier lappologist research and politically aimed functional Saami studies towards emancipatory science which critically analyses Saami culture and Saaminess using both emic perspectives and different theoretical and conceptual approaches. Conference will bring together researchers, students, and artists specialized in Saami studies and culture. In addition it offers a forum for discussion concerning comparative indigenous studies. International scholars offer new perspectives on Saami studies and vice versa. We wish to gather together scholars specialized in indigenous studies and to offer a possibility to create new networks which will help to develop multidisciplinary research across state borders.

Three-day- Conference program is consisting of eight keynote speakers. Keynote Speakers have their lectures at the Saami Cultural Centre Sajos and lectures are open for the public and free of charge. Conference languages will be English, Saami and Finnish. There will be simultaneous interpretation for these languages at public lectures.

Advance registration to other Conference program, like workshop sessions, is required. There will be three to five parallel workshops including 80 presentations. Conference registration fee including PhD.students is 50 € and Registration fee for University students including DAVVI-students is 10 €.
