Modern global and imperial history, cultural encounters, social and cultural history of medicine, health and the body, the history of colonialism, African history (particularly Malawi and Southern Africa), British history, intellectual history, methods and methodology, history of mental health and illness. In addition, I am interested in and work upon histories of religion (particularly Christian missions), science and technology, history of sport, and historical anthropology.
Main current research themes: cultural encounters in medicine and healthcare, mobility, networks and making of knowledge (with focus on Southern Africa and British empire), history of development work.
Moderni globaalihistoria ja imperiumien historia, kulttuurikohtaamiset, lääketieteen, terveyden ja ruumiin sosiaali- ja kulttuurihistoria, kolonialismin historia, Afrikan historia (erityisesti Malawi ja eteläinen Afrikka), Britannian historia, aatehistoria, historian metodologia, kehitysyhteistyön historia. Seuraan ja tutkin myös uskontojen historiaa (erityisesti lähetyshistoriaa), tieteen ja teknologian historiaa, urheiluhistoriaa sekä historiallista antropologiaa.
Tärkeimmät nykyiset tutkimusteemat: kulttuurikohtaamiset lääkinnän ja terveyden aloilla, liikkuvuus, verkostot ja tiedontuotanto (erityisesti eteläisessä Afrikassa ja brittiläisessä imperiumissa), kehitysyhteistyön historia. Tutkimusprojekti Koneen säätiön rahoittama hanke Kehitysyhteistyön mieli ja mielettömyys (ks. alla) joka kytkeytyy Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seuran toteuttamaan Suomalaisen kehitysyhteistyön tekijät - muistitietokeräykseen.
