Who are you?
I am Jeena Ainikkal Velayudhan and I would identify myself a researcher, artist, and a critical thinker.
Where you come from?
Kerala, the southernmost state of India.
What you have done before coming to Oulu?
I was doing my master's study majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics before coming here as a doctoral student.
Why did you decide to come to Oulu?
I was so fascinated with my master's project that I began to search for PhD positions in similar but relatively a new branch compared to my field of study. Also, the PhD hunting was focused more among my dream countries; Finland was one among them, mainly because of its impressive education and governing systems. So, when I found a rather challenging and interesting research project in University of Oulu I applied and here I am!
What is the name of your research project?
'Computer vision-based control of micro- and/or optical manipulators for automated single-cell analysis'
What is the expected main outcome from your research project?
The long-term goal of my research, as the title suggests, is to establish a computer-vision based automated micro- and/or optical manipulators to study the interaction between HUVEC (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells), which is of special interest because it plays a crucial role in the development of new lymph and blood vessels, which is one of the important steps in the spreading of tumor! The automation of micromanipulator and/or the optical tweezers will be achieved based on the analysis of input images of the interacting endothelial cells, or in other words by the 'machine vision' techniques! The two major outcomes we expect to have are, one, the establishment of the automated system and second to decode the interaction between two endothelial cells and to find the key to the spreading mechanism of the tumor. Once we know the interaction we will be able to find a way to terminate/enhance the cell to cell interaction, by which the spreading of the tumor could be controlled. Also, if we can make the machine learn various single particle interaction by giving them as input, with very slight modifications we could use the micro- or/and optical manipulators for any single particle analysis, which drastically will reduce the laborious human effort…
What you would like to do after you have got PhD degree?
To speak vaguely, after my doctoral study, either I would continue with the machine vision-based imaging techniques or I would explore the machine learning possibilities for improvising image analysis further, in the academia.
What I4 Future program has so far given to you? What has been good? Have you missed something?
The interdisciplinary nature of the I4 Future program is appreciative because it gives rather broad exposure.
I don't know if I missed something, I am more or like still in the phase of learning.
What kind of the atmosphere /weather in Oulu has been in your opinion?
About the weather in Oulu, I think it’s been almost winter all the time except a small window of two months which was summer that was pretty green, sunny and lively. The silence and peace of a village and almost equally distributed infrastructure as a utopian city I like the most about this place. Also, the culture definitely makes me feel home as it welcomes everyone alike…
On my own words
I belong to the research group ‘Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis’ (CMVS), ITEE. The long-term goal of my research is to build an automated or a semi automated micromanipulator for single cell analysis and manipulation, with which we can investigate more on the cell to cell communication by measuring force between cells. I’ll be working with SensApex Oy on behalf of this research. I’ve started my research life on 30th January, 2017 that will last for the next four years. Being an interdisciplinary research topic, I get opportunities to know more about the cell biological aspects, optical physics and the machine vision & image analysis aspects, which is exciting (as well as make me feel more responsible!!!), also I believe I can make use of this opportunity to expand the area of my skills as well as increase the depth of knowledge which in result is the key of innovation!
I am from the southernmost part of India. I did my masters majoring in Physics and Minoring in mathematics, and graduated in 2016 with a very interesting master’s thesis on ‘non-invasive imaging through opaque scattering layer using visible light’. Apart from the academics I’d call myself as a critical thinker, artist and a curious person
