Infotech Oulu Workshop 2013 on Optoelectronics Devices and Instrumentation XIII

Infotech Oulu Workshop 2013, thirteenth in series on Optoelectronic Devices and Instrumentation and concentrating this time on “Novel measurement techniques and applications”, will be organized in 19th November  - 21th November 2013. Workshop will be held in Oulu, Finland. The workshop will be lectured in English and is intended for advanced undergraduate and post-graduate students with some background in optics, optoelectronics devices and their manufacturing techniques.

The workshop is closely associated with, and co-funded by, the Infotech Oulu Doctoral Program and Graduate School of Modern Optics and Photonics. Graduate students receive tentatively about 3-4 credit points by successfully passing the course.

Raman spectroscopy - Dr Sumeet Mahajan

Course outline

  • Light-matter interactions; Introduction to spectroscopy
  • Vibrational spectroscopy and introduction to IR and Raman; comparison with fluorescence
  • Nanoscale metallic materials, their unique optical properties, introduction to plasmonics and their use in analysis and biomedical diagnostics
  • Advanced Raman techniques: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, imaging and bioanalytical applications
  • Non-linear spectroscopy: overview of techniques and bioimaging applications

 

Digital holographic microscopy and speckle interferometry – Dr- Björn Kemper

  • Basics about lens less and lens-based holography and digital holography (including numerical wave propagation, off-axis and phase shifting digital holography, and digital holography with partial coherent light sources).

 

  • Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) including, basics of optical microscopy, holographic autofocusing, 3D object tracking and quantitative phase microscopy.
     
  • Application of DHM for quantitative live cell imaging (including some basics of cell biology) and usage of DHM in multimodal imaging platforms.
     
  • Basics of electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI), its application in endoscopy for deformation and shape measurement, biomedical applications of endoscopic ESPI.

 

 

Workshop consists of approximately 16 lecture hours. A recreational social program, which also aims at promoting discussions with instructors and between participants, is an integral part of the workshop.

At the end of the workshop a final examination is arranged for graduate students, who are required to read the preparatory material delivered in advance.
