The Academy of Finland has selected Professor of Communications Engineering Matti Latva-aho as Academy Professor for the period 1 January 2017-31 December 2021.
Nomination as an Academy Professor is a valued recognition in the Finnish research field for a person's competence in his own discipline as well as in the whole scientific community. Matti Latva-aho is one of the world's top researchers in telecommunications.
As Academy Professor, Latva-aho will promote research within his own field in full-time research activities. He will be carrying out his own research plan, lead his research team and provide guidance to junior researchers. Thesis supervision and teaching are also included in the tasks of an Academy Professor.
"Latva-aho's choice as Academy Professor shows his remarkable merits. Research in his field, wireless radio data communications, conducted at the university of Oulu, is right at the tip, and will have a significant impact on the development of the industry in the future", Rector of the University of Oulu, Jouko Niinimäki says.
Academy Professor Matti Latva-aho has his research focus on high frequency wireless communication systems and 5G technology development. The capacity of wireless communications networks is ultimately constrained by limited spectrum availability. Under current plans, new spectrum allocations for mobile data communications will only be made at much higher frequency bands than those used at present. This will bring major changes to how future wireless radio systems should be planned and optimised. Latva-aho’s research will help to improve understanding of how the design criteria for future wireless systems will change and what kind of transmission technologies and transmitter/receiver architectures they should use.
Matti Latva-aho was born in Kuivaniemi in 1968. He holds a doctorate degree awarded by the University of Oulu in 1998. Latva-aho has worked on telecommunications research at the University of Oulu since the early 1990s. He was appointed professor of communications engineering in 2000. In 1998-2006, he served as the director of the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC). Today, he leads the research unit CWC Radio Technologies .
Latva-aho has won several major awards:
- Nokia Foundation Award in 2015
- IEE Mountbatten Premium Award in 2003
- Electrical Engineering Foundation Award Finland in 2000
- The best dissertation in technology in 1998
In the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, there is currently another Academy Professor, Juha Kostamovaara, whose research field is electronical engineering.
