Aims and projects

With the aim to reveal etiology, also as basis for treatment and rehabilitation, this comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatric study consists of different subprojects.

  1. Epidemiological study, including prevalence, validity of screening and diagnostic methods, co-morbid neurological and psychiatric  disorders, especially anxiety
  2. Molecular genetic study of outpatients with ASD
  3. Brain morphology and function in ASD , including MRI, fMRI, ERP, SPECT, neuropsychological tests and special tests for affect recognition
  4. Discovering Early Autism

II  INFANT PSYCHIATRY

With the aims to study parenting stress, early human relationships, infants´ and toddlers´ mental health, and in order to improve the abilities of Children´s Health Care centres to recognise early developmental disorders including ASDS and emotional and behavioural problems, this child psychiatric study is made up of three subprojects.

  1. Screening of infants´ and toddlers´ developmental, emotional and behavioural disturbances at two periods (in the years 1999-2000 and 2008-9) using parental questionnaires and health care nurses´ observations, and performing clinical child psychiatric examination to the screened ones, with aim to develop early interventions to those in risk
  2. Early human relationships and development of twins (overlapping with IV, 3 Twin research on infants)
  3. Discovering Early Autism (overlapping with I ASD)

III  ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) and AT RISK MENTAL STATE (ARMS)

collaborating with Oulu Brain and Mind Study, chaired by Juha Veijola Department of Psychiatry

Aims and projects

With the aim to study etiology, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, this comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatric study consists of two different projects.

  1. ADHD in Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC), including follow up from pregnancy up to 22 years of age.  As etiological risk factors, molecular genetics, pregnancy, delivery and circumstances in childhood and adolescence are studied.  Follow-up of developmental delays and ADHD-symptoms from childhood up to young adulthood is performed in consecutive examination periods, including parental questionnaires, self-report questionnaires and diagnostic interviews.  Additionally, connections between brain and mind are studied with neuro-cognitive tests and fMRI.
  2. Risk of Psychosis  in Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC), including follow up from pregnancy up to 22 years of age, and future follow up even later.    The connections between brain and mind are studied with neuro-cognitive tests and fMRI, which measures are identical with those for ADHD and mainly identical with those for ASD (see project I).
