International Julius Bartels Medal was awarded to Professor Ilya Usoskin

The 2018 Julius Bartels Medal is awarded to Ilya G. Usoskin, Professor of space physics at the University of Oulu, for his key contributions to long-term changes of cosmic rays and solar activity.

Julius Bartels Medal is awarded by the European Geosciences Union EGU, which is the Europe’s premier geosciences union. It describes Usoskin as a founder of the space climate discipline. Ilya Usoskin is one of the most eminent cosmic-ray scientists, provided ground-breaking contributions to the heliosphere, long-term changes in solar activity and solar-terrestrial relations. His recent review paper, History of solar activity over millennia, is rapidly becoming the definitive work on the topic. Read more about Usoskin's research at the University news.

Professor Usoskin is involved in the University of Oulu's spearhead project Climate and Atmospheric Effects of the Sun in Arctic Regions in the Earth and near-space system and environmental change focus area, which is coordinated by the Kvantum Institute.
