Research group description
The main focus of cardiology research team is on prediction and prevention of sudden unexpected cardiac death (SCD) by integrating data obtained from comprehensive phenotyping and genotyping of the risk of SCD in various population samples, e.g. in large national cohorts including 25.000 middle-aged subjects with a long follow-up. The risk factors of SCD will also be analysed in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) in ARTEMIS project including 2000 CAD patients with and without type 2 diabetes and in the FinGesture study which is a prospective case-control study including currently 4200 victims of ischemic SCD verified by autopsy (cases) and 4000 survivors of an acute coronary event (controls).

Where are we headed
We anticipate that this multidisciplinary project combining the expertise in clinical cardiology, biomedical engineering, together with national and international collaborators will bring more insight into the background of fatal arrhythmic events and ultimately would benefit the development of new targeted strategies to prevent premature sudden cardiac death at the population level.
