Tjäderhane Leo

Dental caries and restorative dentistry

Research unit: Oral Health Sciences

Group leader

Professor Leo Tjäderhane (DDS, PhD)

What do we do

The project focuses on clarifying basic biological and behavioral factors behind dental caries and other tooth diseases’ progression and renewal. The group has developed a method in which treatment decision can be automatically followed from patient database using data mining approach and allowing filling survival analysis. We also have epidemiological research to search e.g. health behavior and socio-economic factor effects on caries to find multi-approachal means to control caries disease.

Experimental part of work has shown that composite filling bonding durability can be significantly improved with enzyme-inhibiting compounds. We aim to develop better methods and materials to improve the longevity of fillings.

Where are we headed

The research provides information of the survival of the dental fillings done with different materials. It will help to understand the behavioral and biological mechanisms behind the loss of composite dental fillings and aid in the development of new, more durable filling materials and techniques.
