31-year follow-up study

Description
The general aim of the study is to improve the health and well-being of the young working age population. Risk factors connected with working and functional capacity, social welfare and illnesses are aimed to be studied through previously collected data. Data will be used for medical and public health studies that relate to causes and prevention of illnesses.

The study consists of the postal questionnaire and the health examination for the cohort members living in the provinces of Oulu and Lapland and a part of them living in other parts of Finland.

Coverage
Target population: N = 11 637 (100%)
Cases with known address: N = 11 322 (97.2%)
Postal questionnaire data received: N = 8 767 (77.4%)
Clinical examination data received: N = 6 033 (71.3%)

Data collection
Addresses of the cohort members and data of mortality were obtained from  the National Population Centre of Finland and Central Statistical Office of Finland by sending identity numbers of the members to these authorities. If the address was not obtained from there, it was inquired from the Finnish embassiess abroad.

The questionnaire study was started in the beginning of the year 1997. The questionnaire included questions on background information, physical exercise and performance capacity, occupation and working history, environment, health, gynecology, using public health services and living habits.
