Pictures about the nature of North-Finland: year 2002

The sea (here: the north part of Gulf of Bothnia) is cold in the spring, the are even ice there...
The arrival of spring is now a couple of weeks ahead of time - the grey alder (Alnus incana)
is already flowering. But we don't see any new green leaves in the onshore broad-leaved forests.
In summertime these alder forests seem to be like groves.

The buds of spruce (Picea excelsa) are now opening; the brown budscales are falling down,
and dusky green new needles will appear. New needles are very sensitive to frost.
You can make tasty tea from these sprucenuts!
