In northern tree-covered hill areas, the so-called tykkysnow can accumulate on the trees.

Tykkysnow = snow and hoar frost on trees. Wet snow clings to the trees; tykkysnow and hoar frost accumulate more snow into themselves.

The snow that has accumulated onto the trees usually melts away in thaw, or the wind drops it off. Tykkysnow is most abundant in central northern Finland (in the area between Sotkamo and Salla) in the northern tree-covered hill areas where there is forest at the top of a fell. The humid airmasses coming from the southwest are forced by the terrain to climb higher, which makes the humidity condense on the trees hoar frost and snow. The tykkysnow in the top areas does not come loose off the trees even in windy conditions.

There can be around 3-4 tons of tykkysnow in one normal-sized spruce. This type of snow burden often cuts off trees in forest at the top of fells (damage caused by tykky); pine trees are especially sensitive to tykky.
