Academy of Finland funding to Miika Nieminen for novel MR imaging methodology

Professor Miika Nieminen (Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics and Technology, University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital ) has received four years Academy Project funding (392 674 €) from Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering for a project entitled "Imaging of water dynamics in biological tissues".

Project description: MRI is a well-matured discipline in medical diagnostics, but it still suffers from low sensitivity and specificity towards microscopic structural changes in tissue. This project will remedy this shortcoming by establishing novel MRI contrasts, which fundamentally describe either the dynamics or structure of the tissue for the creation of an MR image in the MRI scanner. The novel methodologies will significantly advance the diagnosis and treatment of eg. common musculoskeletal and brain diseases.
