Exchanges outside Europe, call for applications Oct 1-15, 2019

Call for exchange applications at the University of Oulu is open for exchanges through bilateral agreements and ISEP program. Time of exchange is either in Autumn 2020 or Spring 2021, according to host university's academic calendar. One student place is always one term unless otherwise stated. If more than one student is selected to the host university, students will in principle be placed on exchange during different semesters. During their studies at University of Oulu students can be selected to each exchange programme once.

The Call is open from Tuesday October 1, 2019 to Tuesday October 15, 2019 at 23.59. Please note, that the availability of exchange destinations is subject to changes. The number of places and destinations available will be confirmed by the beginning of the call for applications.

The online application and required application enclosures are submitted through the University of Oulu SoleMOVE online system at https://saas.solenovo.fi/solemove/. Students log in to SoleMOVE with their University of Oulu personal account. Please note that late applications will not be considered.

REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES ON HOW TO APPLY

Call for application is open for all students doing their Bachelor or Master’s degree at the University of Oulu. It should be noted that certain universities are open only for specified field(s) or level of study, this information is available next to the destination information below.  Check restrictions also from the host university website. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the university where s/he wishes to apply organizes courses relevant to the applicant’s degree.

A minimum of 3.0 GPA is required from all applicants.

Applicants must have completed at least approx. 45cr of studies at the University of Oulu at the time of application. Master’s level students: please present your Bachelor degree transcript in the application if you have not completed your Bachelor degree at University of Oulu.

It is possible to apply to a maximum of three host institutions with one application.

Language requirements for selected students may differ according to exchange destination. Please see below for more specific information. N.B. All additional language certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS or CEFR are requested later during Autumn 2019 from students selected to these destinations.

REQUIRED APPLICATION ENCLOSURES

Required attachments that are to be either scanned and/or uploaded in the system. Only Word or pdf formats are accepted:

1. Study Plan: (scanned document) Make a study plan for all your choices. Familiarise yourself with the host university’s study guide(s) on their website. If no study guides are available for the desired exchange period, please finalise your study plan according to ongoing semester. Select approximately five courses for your study plan and list them all in one A4 sheet (name, code and description of the course). Ask your Faculty International Coordinator, study adviser, amanuensis or professor to check, approve and sign your study plan. This person should be someone responsible for giving a statement of recognition of studies abroad. All studies taken during the exchange are to be transferred back to the University of Oulu as a part of the student's degree.

2. Transcript of Records: (scanned document) an official Transcript of Records in English which shows the average grade of your studies. The transcript is available from your own faculty’s study affairs. You need an average grade of 3.0 or higher in order to be selected. Please ask for a Transcript for “international use/kv-käyttöön”. The transcript available through weboodi is not valid as it does not show the average grade.

3. Upper secondary school certificate or equivalent (scanned document) which shows the student’s English language grade:
Applicants English language skills are evaluated through a language certificate. Attach a upper secondary school certificate (lukion päättötodistus) or other official language certificate. If you feel the upper secondary school certificate does not reflect your current language skills make sure you attach another language certificate, for example one provided by our University’s languages and communication unit.

If applying to destinations that list other languages than English as the teaching language please indicate clearly your language skills in those languages.

4. Motivation Letter in English. In this letter you tell us your academic and other possible reasons on why you wish to go on exchange. Maximum length: 400 words. You can find a lot of guidelines on how to write a Motivation letter on the internet. The letter is to be addressed to University of Oulu exchange team.

SELECTION PROCESS

Exchange student selections are made based on student’s general motivation, motivation towards exchange, language skills and success in studies. Note that some students may be also invited for an interview. Interviews will be organised during weeks 44 and 45, dates will be confirmed later.  Possible cancellations in previous Calls for Application may weaken the possibilities in the application process. After the deadline all applications are evaluated and selection is made by a team that consists of members from Academic affairs and faculties. All applicants are informed about the selections latest by November 15.

When a selected candidate has confirmed his/her selection in SoleMOVE, the application process continues according to host universities’ application process. The final decision is always made by the host university. If a candidate from the University of Oulu withdraws from the host university’s application process without a good reason (medical reasons or equivalent), Academic affairs charges a Cancellation Fee of 200 €.

TRAVEL GRANTS

Students selected to outside Europe bilateral destinations receive a travel grant of 1500 eur from the University of Oulu (amounts during AY 2019-2020).

ISEP Program

ISEP offers exchange destinations to the USA and International-to-International ISEP offers exchange destination to countries all around the world. Total amount of institutions participating is about 300, out of which about 100 are in the US. For possible destinations see ISEP site: https://www.isepstudyabroad.org/.

Application in SoleMOVE for both ISEP and International-to-international ISEP:

  • Select ‘ISEP from Oulu to USA’ as your host institution and ISEP as your exchange programme. If selected as an ISEP student your exchange destination will be determined later
  • write your proposed ISEP study plan for your first choice of ISEP institutions

University of Oulu students first apply to the ISEP program, selected students then submit their ISEP application in which you need to list 5-10 possible ISEP institutions. ISEP then places student in one of the institutions listed. Please note that acceptance to some institutions is more competitive than to others, the information on this for each institution can be found on ISEP website.

ISEP is open to Bachelor and Master’s level students. Studies in Clinical Medicine are not possible through ISEP.

Selected students pay room and board fees to the University of Oulu (approx. 3300eur per term during 2020-21). ISEP exchanges are all for one term.

N.B. Do not start an application through the ISEP website until you have first been officially selected as an ISEP student by the University of Oulu.
