In biophysics we study the fundamental processes of living organisms. In University of Oulu research is mainly Neurobiophysics, focussed on studies of neural signalling and information transmission, properties of membranes of neurons and sensory cells, their molecules (such as ion channels). Central topics are vision in general, vision in the dark, coding of vision in photoreceptors and interneurons in insect compound eye, and visually guided behaviour. The reaching curriculum at MSc-level contains also several courses aimed at Biomedical engineering students, both in Science, Medical and Engineering Faculty.
