Efficient utilization of hemicellulose in biorefining (2020-2022)

The goal of the project is to intensify the utilization of wood biomass. In the manufacture of cellulose-based chemicals hemicellulose streams are produced. In this project the utilization of these streams will be intensified. The utilization potential of hemicellulose-based chemicals is high, because they have lot of target applications in technochemical products, e.g. paints and detergents.

The research is focused on finding out the composition and exploitability of the forming hemicellulose streams. The recovery of the hemicellulose fractions is developed to maximize their exploitability. Since, in the project the focus is on biorefineries which are producing cellulose-based products, special attention is paid to the quality of the cellulose-based main product so that it remains high even the hemicellulose is removed for utilization.

The project is mainly funded by European Regional Development Fund via Council of Oulu Region and South Savo Regional Council. The project is carried out by Chemical Process Engineering Research Unit from University of Oulu and FiberLaboratory from South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences.
