Interdisciplinary postdoc position

Phase-separated glass for CO2-sequestering cement (1 year)

The University of Oulu in Northern Finland, with approximately 16,000 students and 3,000 employees, is an international, multidisciplinary research university with a rich pool of creative and intellectual talent. The strengths of the University include broad, multidisciplinary research interests, a modern research and study environment, and wide cooperation with international research and educational institutes (http://www.oulu.fi/university/). The university is located in the city of Oulu, one of the World’s 13 ‘brain belts’.

The open postdoc position is interdisciplinary in nature focusing on synthesis and characterization of nanostructured silicate glasses. The postdoc will work closely with a team of researchers focusing on utilization of the synthesized glasses in cementitious systems and NMR characterization of the glasses.

The position is located at the Sustainable Inorganic Binders Research Group (SIB), in the Faculty of Engineering. SIB in Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit (http://www.oulu.fi/pyokuien/) carries out research in the field of advanced inorganic materials in circular economy. The multicultural research group consists of 20 people, of which 10 with a PhD degree. The emphasis of research is on developing processes to enable circular economy, for example by using inorganic industrial residuals in concrete and advanced materials, or developing carbon-absorbing materials for the low-carbon society.

Subject field and description of the position

Cement is one of the major emitters of CO2, predicted to account for 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions by 2025. To address this, we aim at developing new cementitious materials with negative CO2 emissions. Approach is based on developing highly reactive glasses based on silicate minerals. Generally, glasses made from silicate minerals have poor reactivity. However, in our earlier work, we have found that reactivity of glasses can be significantly increased by introducing phase separation during glass formation. Unlike in conventional cement, silicate-based glasses can be manufactured without CO2 emissions. Furthermore, as the subsequent cement hardens partially by carbonation, the net CO2 emissions can be negative, leading to CO2 sequestration.

The length of the positions is one year, from May 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020.

A three-month trial period will be effective in the beginning of the contract.

Required qualifications and assessment

We are looking for a creative postdoctoral fellow for the project, with a possibility for continuation. The successful applicant must have completed a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics or a related field, with very good/excellent grades, by the application deadline. Fluent English, as well as good communication and teamwork skills are required.

When assessing the applicants’ qualifications, issues to be considered will include the grades obtained during MSc and PhD studies, prizes received, scientific publications and presentations, activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field in question and international activities.

The postdoc will carry out research work within SIB under the guidance and supervision of one or more of the senior researchers, publish research results in leading international scientific journals. Other duties include teaching undergraduate courses (5 % of the total of 1624 working hours per year) and supervising undergraduate and MSc theses. In addition, she/he may be obligated to participate in administrative tasks of the Research Unit and University.

Starting date: possible to start immediately or as agreed.

Salary

The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3 % of the basic salary level for the post. The salary thus being roughly 3500 - 3800 euros per month for a post-doctoral researcher.

Application Procedure

In your written application please provide clearly the following information and appendices:

1) Brief curriculum vitae in English (including list of publications)

2) Scanned copies of degree certificates (MSc and PhD)

3) Extract of the study record(s)

4) Brief description of research interests, experience and motivation, in English

5) Your availability (starting time)

6) Contact information of two persons whom may be asked to give a statement of the candidate

Applications, together with all relevant enclosures, should be submitted using electronic application form by March 30th 2019. The applications will not be returned.

Interview

The potential candidates for the positions may be called for interview.
