Studies at University of Oulu 2012-2013

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

BSc (tech) in Environmental Engineering

Profile of the Degree: 

All students participating in the bachelor's degree studies in environmental engineering take the same core requisite programme courses. The programme provides excellent and diverse possibilities, and eligibility for further studies at master's level, and produces potential for basic-level design tasks and operational jobs in process engineering. The degree consists of subject studies in process and environmental engineering, basic studies in mathematics and science, and studies that will produce non-technical professional working-life skills.

The industry-branch-independent, and phenomena-based approach of this educational programme provides students with excellent abilities to apply the learned skills to areas in addition to fields of process engineering. The learned processes are utilised in industry, environmental construction, and in water purification. The teaching aims to give the student skills in the control, design and development of factors affecting processes in different applications.

Course Structure Diagram and Courses Required for the Degree: 

The Bachelor of Science (technology) degree (180 ECTS cr.) consists of basic and intermediate studies (approx. 120 ECTS cr.), modules preparing for the option (40 ECTS cr.), optional courses (10 ECTS cr.) as well as a Bachelor's thesis with related seminars or communication studies (a total of 10 ECTS cr.).

Learning Outcomes: 

The objective of the degree programme in environmental engineering is to train creative and co-operative academic bachelor-level professionals for engineering careers and to educate them further as experts in their own area of specialisation.

In the first three years of the programme, a bachelor's degree in engineering is completed. The studies in the degree are uniform for all students in the programme. The degree provides excellent and wide-range abilities and produces the potential for employment in basic-level design and operating jobs in process engineering.

The bachelor's degree consists of subject studies in process and environmental engineering, basic studies in mathematics and science, and studies that will produce personal non-technical professional working-life skills. The studies are divided into three phases:

  1. Descriptive phase: The student will be introduced to the target phenomena in process and environmental engineering and to the control thereof on a general level.
  2. Analytical phase: The student’s perspective will be broadened by modelling.
  3. Synthetic phase: The technical design and development approach based on the analysis of phenomena and their control is emphasised during this phase of studies.

The bachelor-level studies of the programme can be divided to four entities of knowhow, to the so-called competence areas. In all these areas, the objectives mainly focus on the student's general basic level planning skills and abilities to expand his/her knowledge in the next two cycles of education (master's and doctoral studies).

The bachelor-level competence areas and their learning outcomes are the next:

  1. Phenomena-based modelling and design and the competence areas leading to those: The student learns the basic principles of phenomena-based design and will be able to produce static and dynamic process models both in industrial and natural processes, as well as analyse physical, chemical, biological and geo-scientific phenomena occurring in those processes.
  2. Mastery of the entities for manufacturing activities: The student can evaluate the production and manufacturing activities as entities with the technological, environ­mental protection, economic, occupational safety and juridical factors.
  3. Command of automation technology:  The student can recognise the need for automation technology for controlling the functions of different systems, and can design the physical and programmatic parts of those systems.
  4. Non-technical capabilities: In technical design, research and development tasks certain non-technical professional working-life skills are needed. These include, among other things, social, multicultural and internationality skills. The student is able to write, analyse and evaluate texts within his/her own professional and scientific field and work in a target-oriented fashion in different working life situations including personal performance and group communication.

Students, who have completed the bachelor-level studies within the degree programme of environmental engineering, are familiar with the general principles of natural science as they pertain to engineering, and possess current knowledge about environmental and process engineering and the demands on the manufacturing industry. In addition, the graduates are familiar with the juristic and economic laws applied in environmental issues and with the safety premises in engineering.

Arrangements for recognition of prior learning: 

The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

Modes of study: 

The bachelor degree studies (180 ECTS credits) can be completed in three years, each year corresponding to 60 ECTS credits. This equals 1600 hours of student workload per year. The studies are mostly carried out as face-to-face teaching. Studies also include an on-the-job learning period.

Language of Instruction: 

Finnish is the language in which the degree can only be completed.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading: 

The degree-related studies can be completed based on the curriculum.

Assessment methods and criteria for the studies: Study unit descriptions give more exact information on the assessment of study units. Bachelor’s thesis and the maturity test shall be written as the final work in the degree. A Personal Study Plan PSP is compiled for each student, considering student’s prior learning and work experience.

Grading: a numerical scale 0-5 in whole numbers or verbal grading Pass or Fail is used in assessing a completed course.

In determining the final grade for a study module, a credit-weighted average is utilized. The grades of Pro Gradu Theses and Diploma Theses shall not be considered when determining the average of advanced studies. 

Separate provisions have been laid down for assessing the proficiency in Finnish and Swedish language required in accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004).

Occupational Profiles of Graduates: 

In the bachelor phase, the degree programme of environmental engineering aims to educate the students for the basic level tasks in environmental engineering. A bachelor of science in technology graduate can work in the process and environmental engineering fields, e.g., in restoration, operating and design tasks.

Access to Further Studies: 

A bachelor of science in technology graduate in environmental engineering has good ability to complete the master of science (technology) degree in either of the department’s degree programmes (environmental engineering or process engineering).

Graduation Requirements: 

To be awarded a bachelor's degree, the student must complete the required studies and bachelor's thesis, write a maturity essay demonstrating language proficiency in the language in which the student has been educated (Finnish or Swedish). The student shall demonstrate the satisfactory level of proficiency in Finnish and Swedish required in the Act (424/2003) section 6 subsection 1. The student is also required to demonstrate the level of proficiency in at least one foreign language needed to follow developments in the field of study and to operate in an international environment.

The diploma for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Technology/Architecture) is awarded on request and issued by the Education Dean of the Faculty.  

Qualification Requirements and Regulations: 

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004, Language Proficiency Section 6: Language proficiency

1. The student must demonstrate in studies included in education for a lower or higher University degree or otherwise that he/she has attained:

(1) proficiency in Finnish and Swedish which is required of civil servants in bilingual public agencies and organizations under Section 6(1) of the Act on the Knowledge of Languages Required of Personnel in Public Bodies (424/2003) and which is necessary for their field; and

(2) skills in at least one foreign language needed to follow developments in the field and to operate in an international environment.

2. The provisions of subsection 1 do not concern a student who has been educated in a language other than Finnish or Swedish or a student who has been educated abroad. The language proficiency of such students shall be determined by the university.

3. For special reasons, the university may either totally or partially exempt a student from the requisite language skills referred to in subsection 1.
