Studies at University of Oulu 2012-2013

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in Information Studies

Information Studies is a field of Communication Studies which examines the creation, production, organization, seeking and retrieval, dissemination and sharing, usage and impact of information in different environments of human activity and society. The emergence of the Internet has increased the demand for information specialists in various professional fields. The degrees grant both formal and practical qualifications for specialist work such as design of information services and related processes in libraries, archives and museums, as well as in the information management and service units and research institutions of the public sector and private businesses.

In the University of Oulu, the degree programme has a link with TIEMA, a master’s degree programme in Science Communication, and through a selection of minor subject studies students have the opportunity to become communication-oriented Information Specialists. The research conducted was assessed in RAE as being of high international quality (level 6, scale 1 to 7) and together with the subjects of Finnish Language and Logopedics, the unit was nominated as a Centre of Excellence in Research. The teaching language of Information Studies is Finnish, part of teaching may be provided in English.
