Degree Programme in Music Education

The degree programme in music education aims primarily at the profession of a music teacher in basic and secondary education. The teachers trained by us function on a broad scale in the various sectors of music education, understand the diversity of music cultures and develop their own work also by utilising the new media and technology in many ways. Focal areas of teaching include Afro-American music, music technology and free accompaniment.

The curriculum puts emphasis on the connection with school reality, flexibility and project-centredness as well as self-direction and an inquiring attitude among the students. Training and research in music education is based on a shared view of learning music as a holistic activity that gives rise to new experiences. The education focuses on the meaning of arts in human growth, and music teaching is seen as a part of art education.
