Degree Programme in Swedish Language Subject Teacher Education

Studying Nordic Philology in the University of Oulu translates to a variety of studies in Swedish language and culture, taught in Swedish. In addition to Swedish studies our selection of courses includes individual study packages in the Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic languages.

Studies in Nordic Philology cover core skills required in the subject: language use, language structure, as well as language in relation to culture (i.e. Swedish Literature, Swedish and Fenno-Swedish culture, business culture). As studies progress the emphasis of teaching shifts to enhancing a student’s abilities in, and understanding of, the various disciplines within the subject, such as Communication Science, Language Pedagogics, Translation Studies, Literature, Sociolinguistics and Stylistics. An immersive language training period in a Scandinavian language environment is also included in the studies.

Every year around 20 new students of Nordic Philology are selected through an entry exam. In addition to this, we accept around 10 new Minor Subject students per year. Because of our relatively low yearly intake of students our lectures are usually attended by around 40 students at the most, so the term “mass lectures” does not really apply to us. Teachers and students are acquainted with another at an early stage, and this helps facilitate an atmosphere of easy communication between the teaching staff and students. In addition to this, each yearly class is divided into smaller practice groups in which each student is able to receive personal instruction, e.g. in Swedish pronunciation. According to the feedback we receive from our students the atmosphere for studying Nordic Philology at the University of Oulu is both fun and welcoming.
