Studies at University of Oulu 2013-2014

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in Architecture

The architect’s degree in Finland is a professional degree. The Department of Architecture educates graduates for demanding and versatile expertise and design tasks of the built environment and land-use planning. The first three years of the study program offer a strong artistic, technical and professional ground for carrying on to the master’s degree studies. After the bachelor’s degree the student selects his / her own field of specialization between the three master level orientations available: Urban Design and Planning, Building Design and Architectural Design.

The study program consist of courses in history and theory of architecture, building preservation, contemporary architecture, urban design, planning, building technology, design and art studies, as well as practical training. The main focus is on studio projects which are made both individually and in teams. Learning of CAD programs and handwork skills are integrated with project work. Common critique sessions lay a foundation for architecture debate and provide the students with skills needed in the profession.

The study environment is international. The students may complete part of their degree in exchange abroad. The world’s northernmost architecture school in Oulu welcomes foreign students to study in the International Master’s Programme in Architectural Design. International workshops as well as guest lectures by noted domestic and foreign architects, researchers and artists are an integral part of the education.
