Degree Programme in Geography

Geography is a field of the future. It is also one of the widest fields of science. It studies different spatial and regional processes on the surface of the Earth, mainly in the context of human activities. One of the focal areas of geography is the examination of the relationship between people and the environment. This relation and its changing meanings are still important starting-points in geography.

In the University of Oulu, geography is divided into five fields of specialization: physical geography, human geography and regional geography (geography option), tourism geography, geoinformatics and into regional development and regional policy. The subject matter of Geography is regional systems in both physical nature and social aspects. Geography has a special role of a mediator between social and natural sciences. Due to the wide-ranging character of their research subjects, geographers currently apply the theories and methods of natural sciences, cultural and social sciences widely. Similarly, the aim of education in geography is to provide students with wide and profound theoretic-methodological knowledge and to offer the capability to master the contents of the field. After graduation, students are able to apply this knowledge in e.g. scientific research, regional planning or as subject teachers.

The main language of instruction is Finnish, but part of the instruction is in English. There are around 20 courses in English per year. In the courses that are instructed in English, exams and seminar works are also in the same language.
