Degree Programme in Geosciences

Research in geosciences focuses on the genesis, evolution, composition and structure of different parts of the Earth. In the Department, geosciences are taught in the following three subjects: geology and mineralogy (bedrock geology), quaternary geology and geochemistry. The main aim of the research is to understand the ancient and current geological processes of the Earth and the geological factors that influence the environment and well-being of humankind.

Besides the basic research, geosciences have a strong applied aspect related to different functions of the society. This is currently seen as the raise of the significance of mineral resources and mining activities, particularly in northern Europe. It has also been realized how much the human activities and culture are dependent on geological natural resources. Despite increasing recycling, the modern society needs more and more new minerals and metals for many industrial purposes, sand, gravel and clay for construction, peat for energy production, and good-quality groundwater for water supply. All these resources come from geological formations. In addition, solving many environmental issues and application of sustainable development require geological expertise.
