Degree Programme in Physics

Physics is a science which aims to give scientific answers to fundamental questions about the universe. These answers have great cultural significance because they constitute the only means of forming a world view that is rational and based on reality. In addition, they have vitally important practical significance, since our current well-being is fundamentally based on the knowledge given by physics and the applied sciences based on physics.

At the University of Oulu, a physics student can freely choose a major subject from an exceptionally wide selection of different physical sciences. The available subjects are physics, theoretical physics, biophysics, geophysics and astronomy. The teaching is based on the latest scientific research and it especially emphasizes independent problem solving skills. The diverse teaching methods – including lectures, exercises and laboratory works – are complemented by small research projects, tutoring, personal guidance by the teachers, and active counselling.

The scientific research at the Department of Physics is of high quality and genuinely international and the department has been nominated as an official “Centre of Excellence in Research” within the University of Oulu. Graduates from the Department of Physics of the University of Oulu have been very successful in finding employment. Their employers include small and large companies, public administration, several schools and universities, and many research institutes in Finland and abroad. The degree programme in physics consists of a 3-year bachelor’s degree and a 2-year master’s degree.
