Studies at University of Oulu 2013-2014

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences

Students selected to the Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences have nursing science as their main subject and nursing science didactics as their minor subject. The degree programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc, 180 ECTS) and Master of Health Sciences (MHSc, 120 ECTS). Master’s degree qualifies students to pursue post-graduate studies aimed to obtain the degree of Licentiate or Doctor of Health Sciences.

The degree programme qualifies students to work independently as teachers and educators, to assess development in their own field, to apply scientific knowledge and methods in their own work and to plan work and education in their own field based on research. Those graduating from the degree programme work as experts in demanding leading positions in social and health care involving teaching, guidance, planning, development, projects, research and management on both national and international level.

The employment situation of newly graduated students has been good. By selecting optional courses, students can target their studies so that they also qualify for positions in clinical nursing or nursing management. Studying involves intensive, long-term work in collaboration with a group of fellow students and teachers. The aim is to have students work in research groups according to their individual study plans, drawn up in collaboration with their personal tutor, and if needed, the research project manager. Learning is promoted with activate blended learning and teacher training in welfare and health institutions and clinical nursing environment.
