Studies at University of Oulu 2013-2014

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

MSc (Econ. & Bus. Adm.) in International Business Management, IMP

Profile of the Degree: 

International Business is studied in the Degree Programme in International Business and Management. International Business as a subject focuses on the strategies and practices of internationalizing and growth-oriented companies, especially within high technology, high context, or service oriented businesses. There are three core learning threads of International Business: approaches to international business, the practice of international business, and building up international businesses. These three threads can be seen at all levels of studies from bachelor through master to doctoral level. Within these learning threads the objective of the studies in International Business is to provide the students with concepts, theories, frameworks and practical tools to describe, analyze and understand and thereby to work in, lead, manage, and build up businesses that have an international or cross-cultural orientation. There is a strong industry and business focus in the courses that include visiting lecturers, case studies and examples on internationally active firms. The common programme with management supports the achievement of strategic viewpoint to business development and understanding of structures and processes in business organizations. The common programme also widens the palette for alternative studies at intermediate and advanced levels making it possible to direct part of their studies on the basis of personal interests.

International Business as a subject consists of basic, intermediate and advanced courses. Basic courses provide the students with concepts to describe international business settings and situations and capture the core elements of international business. At the intermediate level the courses focus on specific topics of international business practice and provide conceptual tools to analytically approach phenomena and apply the content in different contextual and managerial settings of international business. Also scientific articles are tied to the course requirements. At the master’s level the courses focus on newest research knowledge on issues relevant in the practice and development of international business. Throughout the studies in International Business, the students learn different working and learning methods, and analysis, argumentation, reporting and collaboration skills.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of Master´s degree in Management or International Business a student is able to evaluate and apply the conceptual tools of management and international business in order to build up a comprehensive and holistic understanding of administrative and organizational phenomena as well as practices. In addition, a student is able to build and manage growth-oriented and international businesses in a successful way. Therefore, he or she can apply and create knowledge about organizations so that multi-cultural needs of firms can be handled well. It means that he or she cannot only collaborate and co-create with others in a firm, but also work individually in work- and business-related interventions. In that way, he or she is experienced in a clear oral and written communication. It means a critical way of thinking that is based on up-to-date academic research. The degree provides a good qualification for doctoral studies in the fields of management and international business. 

Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning: 

The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

Modes of Study: 

The student studies full-time, corresponding to 60 ECTS per year. This equals to 1600 hours of student workload per year. The full degree (120 ECTS) can be completed in two years, studying full-time. The studies are carried out as contact teaching and learning tasks.

Language of Instruction: 

All the courses are instructed in English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading: 

Assessment methods and criteria for the studies: The degree-related studies can be completed based on the curriculum. This means that the student studies the basic studies, intermediate studies, advanced studies and elective studies the curriculum contains, in accordance with the curriculum. The study units are primarily completed by attending examinations and with written assignments and they are assessed by the person responsible for the study unit. The assessment is often based on the grades of final exams and/or written assignments. Also other assessment criteria are used. Study unit descriptions give more exact information on the assessment of study units. Master’s thesis shall be written as the final work in the degree. A Personal Study Plan PSP is compiled for each student, considering student’s prior learning.

Grading: (The University of Oulu Education Regulations 17§): a numerical scale 0-5 in whole numbers or verbal grading Pass or Fail is used in assessing a completed course. In numerical scale zero stands for fail.

In determining the final grade for a study module, a credit-weighted average is utilized. The grades of Pro Gradu Theses shall not be considered when determining the average of advanced studies.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates: 

Upon graduation the Master of International Business works within responsible tasks related to international business management and development in SME's and as key persons in big international firms' business units and international consulting firms.

Access to Further Studies: 

After completing Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration the student is eligible to apply for Doctoral level studies.

Graduation Requirements: 

In order to graduate, the student is required to have passed all the courses included in the degree, to have completed the bachelor’s / master’s thesis and the maturity test in acceptable manner and to have handed out the degree certificate request according to the Oulu Business School graduation timetable.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations: 

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

The degree provides qualification to use the honorary Finnish title of “ekonomi”.
