Studies at University of Oulu 2015-2016

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science (Technology), 180 ECTS Credits

Profile of the Degree:

The Bachelor degree programme in Electrical Engineering focuses on electronics, telecommunications and technical physics. Progress in these areas has been enormous over the past decades and continues to accelerate. The applications most visible to users, i.e. mobile phones, laptops and tablets, are constantly evolving and offer users expanding possibilities, and on the other hand will demand ever lower power consumption and faster data transfer. This makes very latest research results essential for development. In addition to electronic devices, new applications almost imperceptible to users have merged into our everyday lives, for example "smart clothing" and complex sensor networks in our surroundings. This has been made possible by the fast development of materials, electronic components and manufacturing technologies which has had an impact on the general development and increasing significance in the growth of the field.

The emphasis of Bachelor's studies is on mathematics, physics and signal processing, as well as professional courses on electronics design, computer engineering and programming, measurement techniques, electronics components and materials and telecommunications. The studies are scheduled to build professional competences from the first year of studies onwards.

After graduation it is typical to continue in the Master's degree programme in Electrical Engineering, but students may also  apply to  Master's studies in the Faculty of Science degree in physics, or physics / mathematics teacher education.

Courses Required for the Degree:

The  Bachelor's degree (180 cr.) consists of basic and intermediate studies, modules preparing for the option, optional courses as well as a Bachelor's thesis with related seminars or communication studies.

Learning Outcomes:

After graduating BSc in the Degree program in Electrical Engineering students can:

  • use mathematical methods to describe and analyze technical problems
  • define and study the phenomena associated with the electromagnetic field and materials,  as well as the related interaction , using the engineering physics concepts and terminology
  • apply mathematics and physics concepts and terminology  to describe the principles of electronics and photonics components
  • analyze, design and construct analog and digital electronic circuits and devices
  • use basic measurement equipment for typical electrical measurements and analyze and plan the necessary instrumentation for these measurements
  • to define the operating principle of the computer, design computer software and interface electronics in order to achieve a desired functionality
  • to define the principles of communication, to use mathematical methods to describe a communication system, for capacity analysis and radio engineering problems and apply their skills  to design communication systems and their elements
  • apply the acquired knowledge in a creative and critical manner in their work
  • work responsibly both independently and  as a team member and to use information technology tools and the acquired communication skills in their work and in communication with outside parties
  • follow and interpret developments in the field of electrical engineering and its social significance and  develop their own skills accordingly
  • communicate independently in their mother tongue, as well as in the second official language and at least in one foreign language to an international audience.

After graduation, students have achieved the skills required to continue in Electrical Engineering MSc program, as well as skills for continuous learning. There is also a possibility to specialize in physics / mathematics teacher education at MSc level.

Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning:

The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

More information: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Modes of Study and Teaching:

This is full-time study, which corresponds to about 60 credits per year, i.e. 1600 hours of student work per year. The degree (180 credits) can be completed in three years full-time study. Teaching is given in the form of lectures, exercises, assignments, laboratory exercises and computer simulations. Practical training (3 credits) can also be included in the degree.

Lectures and exercises are typically arranged from Monday to Thursday, 8.00-16.00 and Fridays 8.00-12.00. Exams usually take place on Fridays, 14.00-17.00.

Language of Instruction:

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading:

Students can perform the basic and subject studies and optional studies according to the curriculum. The courses are usually completed by passing an exam and evaluation is conducted by the person responsible for the course. The assessment is often based on final exam grades or done by several intermediate exams. However, other assessment methods are used, such as micro-exams (continuous assessment), written reports, seminars, etc. The detailed  implementation is given in the course descriptions. The final project is an independent Bachelor's thesis, which contains the actual assignment together with documentation.

Typically 3 exams are arranged for each course during the academic year. Some teachers offer intermediate exams during their course, some courses are also offered as summer exams. Registration for exams is compulsory. The exam list, instructions for registration and exam practicalities as well as exam regulations are posted on the websites: and

Grading: (Koulutuksen johtosääntö pykälä 17: University of Oulu Rules of Procedure, article 17): a numerical scale 0-5 in whole numbers or verbal grading Pass or Fail is used in assessing a completed course. In numerical scale zero stands for fail.

Separate provisions have been laid down for assessing the proficiency in Finnish and Swedish language required in accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004).

Occupational Profiles of Graduates:

The Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree in Electrical Engineering is a comprehensive, yet in-depth study program, which prepares students to follow the developments in the fields of electronics and telecommunications.  They will have tools for life-long learning and professional self-development, through continuous self motivated study as well as through work experience.

Access to Further Studies:

The degree qualifies students to continue studies in the Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering. The graduates also have the opportunity to apply to the University of Oulu, Faculty of Science, Master of Science program in Physics, as well as MSc -level programs in other universities, within the limits of their requirements.

Graduation Requirements and Final Project:

To be awarded a bachelor´s degree, a student must complete the required studies and bachelor´s thesis. The bachelor's theis is typically a solution to a minor technical assignment. By solving the given task, the student applies the acquired skills fully, while the process also trains in technical documentation.  Related to the thesis, the student writes a maturity essay demonstrating language proficiency in the language in which the student has been educated (Finnish or Swedish). The student shall demonstrate the satisfactory level of proficiency in Finnish and Swedish required in the Act (424/2003) section 6 subsection 1. The student is also required to demonstrate the level of proficiency in at least one foreign language needed to follow developments in the field of study and to operate in an international environment. The diploma for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Technology/Architecture) is awarded on request and issued by the Education Dean of the Faculty.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations:

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

The degree does not grant professional qualifications, but the Electrical Engineering BSc graduates are often sought after for summer jobs in the industry and research institutions. The degree gives eligibility to continue studies in the Electrical Engineering Master of Science program. The graduates also have the opportunity to apply for the Faculty of Science Master's program in Physics in a separate application process (flexible study paths).  Furthermore, after completing the related preparatory module and successfully passed aptitude test graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies in the Faculty of Science Master's program and graduate physics / mathematics teachers.
