Studies at University of Oulu 2015-2016

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in Health Management Science

Students selected to the degree programme in health management science have health management science as their major subject. The degree programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), comprising 180 ECTS Credits, and further to the degree of Master of Health Sciences (MHSc), comprising 120 ECTS Credits. After completing the Master's degree, the student is eligible for applying for further academic education for the purpose of obtaining a licentiate and a doctoral degree.

The employment situation of newly graduated students has been excellent. Those graduating from the programme work as experts in multiprofessional demanding leading positions in social and health care in planning, development, project, management and research work on both national and international level. By their choice of minor subjects, students can plan their studies to qualify for various positions, such as social and health care manager, branch manager, administration charge nurse, senior inspector, specialist, charge nurse, development manager, project manager, planning officer, ward manager / service manager or researcher.

The focus of interest for Health Management Sciences is the multiprofessional management of social and health care systems, development of the field and project work, the structure of social and health services, and changes in its management and functions. The studies are based on the scientific, theoretical and methodological foundations of health management science in line with professional realities and expectations. The studies consist of contact teaching, independent work, group work and practical training. The focus is laid on cooperative learning and critical evaluation of one’s learning. The studies are completed according to the Personal Study Plan drawn up in collaboration with one’s personal tutor. The studies are integrated in the research projects of health management science.      

During their studies the students are asked to give feedback for each study unit, for each academic year, in connection with small group supervision and with a nationwide Bachelor’s Degree feedback form. The feedback is processed in the planning committee for education in the Institute of Health Sciences and it is used for developing the quality of study units, curriculum and education.

Admissions: 
The degree programme is applied for through the opintopolku.fi. The language of instruction in the degree programme is Finnish. Applicants have to both apply in Finnish and be able to study in Finnish. Applicants are asked to prove their Finnish language skills in the admissions process.
