Studies at University of Oulu 2015-2016

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in Information Studies

Information Studies belongs to Human Sciences and is a sub-field of Communication Studies. It examines the creation, production, organization, seeking and retrieval, dissemination and sharing, usage and impact of information in different environments of human activity and society.

The emergence of the Internet has increased the demand for information specialists in various professional fields. The degrees grant qualifications for specialist work in planning, development, research and service tasks in private and public sectors including libraries, archives and museums and formally qualify for work in public libraries in particular. The degree programme has a link with TIEMA, a master’s programme in Science Communication. Through a selection of minor subject studies students have the opportunity to become communication-oriented Information Specialists.  Multidisciplinary Oulu University enables specialised minor subject studies.

Basic, applied and contract research is conducted at the high international quality according to the research quality assessment exercise of Communication Studies in 2013 (see the Academy of Finland) and of the University of Oulu in 2014 and 2007.

Research is conducted in multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration. At the University of Oulu research on health information and communication involves partners from the fields of clinical medicine, medical technology, public health, sports and exercise medicine, nutritional science and information systems science, and research on literacies from educational sciences and different fields of technology. Collaborating universities among others are Åbo Akademi University, the University of Tampere and the University of Sheffield, UK.

The teaching language of Information Studies is Finnish, part of teaching may be provided in English.

Admissions: 

The degree programme is applied for through the opintopolku.fi. The language of instruction in the degree programme is Finnish. Applicants have to both apply in Finnish and be able to study in Finnish. Applicants are asked to prove their Finnish language skills in the admissions process.
