5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in Nordic Philology

Studying Nordic Philology at the University of Oulu translates to a variety of courses in the Swedish language and culture, taught in Swedish. In addition to Swedish studies our selection of courses includes introductory courses in the Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic languages.

Studies in Nordic Philology cover core topics in the subject: oral and written communication, language structure and development, literature and culture and translation and text analysis. As studies progress the student broadens his skills in Nordic Philology. An immersive language training period in a Scandinavian language environment is also included in the studies.

Every year around 20 new students of Nordic Philology are selected through an entry exam. In addition to this, we accept around 10 new minor subject students per year. Because of our relatively low yearly intake of students, our lectures are usually attended by around 40 students at the most, so the term “mass lectures” does not really apply to us. Teachers and students get acquainted with each other at an early stage, and this helps to create an atmosphere of easy communication. On many courses, the students are divided into smaller practice groups, in which they receive individual feedback and guidance. According to the feedback we receive from our students, studying Nordic Philology at the University of Oulu is both fun and welcoming.

Several career paths are open to students of Nordic Philology, depending on what courses you take and what minor subjects you choose to study. Many students become language teachers or work as a language experts in business or in public administration.
