5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences

Students selected to the Teacher Education Programme in Health Sciences have nursing science as their main subject and didactics in nursing science as their minor subject. The degree programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), comprising 180 ECTS Credits, and further to the degree of Master of Health Sciences (MHSc), comprising 120 ECTS Credits. The Master’s degree qualifies the students to pursue post-graduate studies aimed at obtaining the degree of Licentiate or Doctor of Health Sciences.

The degree programme qualifies the students to work independently and collaboratively as teachers and to serve in expert tasks in social and health care, to plan work and education in one’s field based on evidence and to assess developments in one’s field with the help of scientific methods.

Those graduating from the degree programme work as experts in demanding leading positions in social and health care involving teaching, guidance, planning, development, projects, research and management on both national and international level.

The employment situation of newly graduated students has been good. By selecting optional courses, students can plan their studies so that they also qualify for positions in clinical nursing or nursing management. Studying involves intensive, long-term work in collaboration with a group of fellow students and teachers. The studies are completed according to the Personal Study Plan drawn up in collaboration with their personal tutor. Learning is enhanced with the use of varied teaching and evaluation methods.

During their studies the students are asked to give feedback for each study unit, for each academic year, in connection with small group supervision and with a nationwide Bachelor’s Degree feedback form. The feedback is processed in the planning committee for education in the Institute of Health Sciences and it is used for developing the quality of study units, curriculum and education.
