Studies at University of Oulu 2015-2016

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

International Master's Programmes

Product Management, Master of Science (Technology), 120 ECTS

Profile of the Degree: 

Degree programme in Product Management leads to Master of Science (Technology) in Product Management degree. The programme combines knowledge in engineering, economics and human behavior. The focus of the programme is the development and management of products (and services) throughout their life-cycles. More accurately graduates will have expertise in the following areas; new product development, rapid development and productisation. Courses will have the latest research knowledge: early phase of product development processes and relevant stakeholders at business case of products, business model and business ecosystem levels. Other focus areas include actual product management and product portfolios, introducing new products, product profitability, and product phase-out. In addition lean thinking and agile methods are included in the course contents. The courses cover product development related knowledge and knowledge management as a more abstract viewpoint, and product data management as a technical viewpoint. One of the latest interest areas is product development related procurement and purchasing. The programme aims to serve true business needs and pursuit academic excellence by producing relevant knowledge for high level education publications and research reports. The research is carried out in projects partially financed by companies.

Courses Required for the Degree: 

The ProM programme and courses have been designed so that the studies can be smoothly carried out in two years.

The degree is composed of so-called orientation studies (1st fall semester), major subject studies (1st spring and 2nd fall semester) and thesis (2nd spring semester). In addition, the programme includes an advanved internship which is typically completed during the summer.

Learning Outcomes: 

Graduates of the programme can solve product management problems related to different industrial and business operations. These problems deal with information collection, analysis and synthesis for decision-making in the area of engineering, economics and human behavior. Graduates can provide logical solutions and development proposals for improving efficiency of products (or services) and processes in product management and business operations, considering business sustainability. In this development work central theories of economics and human behavior should also be applied.

Degree program in Product management aims on Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. Program combines knowledge in engineering, accounting and human behavior. The focus of the program is more accurately on product management specially focusing on developing and managing products (and services) throughout their life-cycles.

Graduates are able to act in their own organisation in an entrepreneurial mode, in other words can act in active role and responsibility in business development. Program offers tools and methods for managerial work in the area of product management in individual, group and process level in an organization. Graduate are able to evaluate managers and experts competence and create development outline for the organization. Presentations and communication skills are learnt during the studies in several negotiations and presentation exercises between students from different back grounds.

The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

Modes of Study and Teaching: 

The ProM studies are carried out within two academic study years, each year corresponding to 59-61 ECTS. This equals 1600 hours of student workload per academic year, and the full degree will be 120 ECTS. The studies include an obligatory summer semester course called Advanced Internship. The studies are full-time studies mainly composed of day-time (8-18) and working-week (Mon-Fri) contact learning (e.g., lectures, practicals, group and project work, book essays, expert seminars and exercises, etc.), and additional e-learning and self-studying during evenings / weekends.

Language of Instruction: 

The language of instruction is English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading: 

The degree-related studies can be completed based on the curriculum.

Assessment methods and criteria for the studies: Study unit descriptions give more exact information on the assessment of study units. Master’s thesis and the maturity test shall be written as the final work in the degree. A Personal Study Plan PSP is compiled for each student, considering student’s prior learning and work experience.

Grading: a numerical scale 0-5 in whole numbers or verbal grading Pass or Fail is used in assessing a completed course. In determining the final grade for a study module, a credit-weighted average is utilized. The grades of the Master’s Thesis shall not be considered when determining the average of advanced studies.

Separate provisions have been laid down for assessing the proficiency in Finnish and Swedish language required in accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004).

Occupational Profiles of Graduates: 

Graduates will have expertise in new product development, rapid development and productisation. They will be competent in different areas of product management such as strategic fit, value maximization and balance of the product portfolio, and can use their knowledge when solving challenging problems in various industries, but especially in technology-intensive industries. Graduates will also have a good background for doctoral studies. Future job titles include, for example, Product Manager, Product Data Manager, Product Portfolio Manager, and Product Development Engineer.

Access to Further Studies: 

The Master of Science (Tech) is a qualification for doctoral studies.

Graduation Requirements and Final Project: 

To be awarded a master's degree, a student must complete the required studies and the master's thesis, write a maturity essay demonstrating language proficiency in the language in which the student has been educated (English). The diploma for the degree of Master of Science (Technology) is awarded on request and issued by the Education Dean of the Faculty.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations: 

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

An MSc (tech) degree in engineering gives access to doctoral studies and a variety of positions in the field.
