Other Master's Programmes (2015-2016)

Master's Programme in Saami Culture

The study subject of Saami culture focuses on information and research into Saami society and culture, however, the society and culture of the Saami are also viewed from the broader perspective of other northern cultures and indigenous peoples. The development of the Saami culture is intertwined with the historical, social and legal-administrative conditions of the Nordic countries. The Saami peoples are connected with other indigenous peoples via similarities in their historical developments, social and societal conditions and claims for maintaining their traditional rights.

The aim of the teaching is to increase the general awareness of the various aspects of the societies of Saami as well as other indigenous peoples and thereby increase understanding and interest in the lives of these peoples. The goal is also to provide more advanced skills for future information coordinators, officials and researchers. Course instructors are experts from Saami, Finnish and foreign backgrounds. The language of instruction is mainly Finnish, but Saami, English or Swedish may also be employed when necessary. Besides a career as a researcher, the studies provide expertise in the fields of culture and communication internationally as well as within the Saami culture. The study subject of Saami culture is interdisciplinary as well as multilingual. In addition to cultural anthropology, history, and Saami language, suitable minor subjects include information studies and various subjects in philology.
