Degree Programme in Geosciences

Research in Geosciences focuses on the genesis, evolution, composition and structure of different parts of the Earth. The main aim of the research is to understand the ancient and current geological processes of the Earth and the geological factors that influence the environment and well-being of humankind. Besides the basic research, Geosciences have a strong applied aspect related to different functions of the society. This is currently seen as the raise of the significance of mineral resources and mining activities, particularly in northern Europe. It has also been realized how much the human activities and culture are dependent on geological natural resources. Despite increasing recycling, the modern society needs more and more new minerals and metals for many industrial purposes, sand, gravel and clay for construction, peat for energy production, and good-quality groundwater for water supply. All these resources come from geological formations. In addition, solving many environmental issues and application of sustainable development require geological expertise.

The degree programme in Geosciences provides the students with the capability to work as geoscience experts in a variety of duties both in the public and private sectors. They learn to apply their skills in exploration, mapping and exploitation of natural resources and solving different kinds of environmental problems. Apart from theoretical studies, laboratory and field studies play an important role in the education. Furthermore, practical training as summer work in companies and other organizations of the field helps the students to get familiar with the potential future tasks and often provides an opportunity to make their Master’s thesis on a subject related to practical geological problems. Internationalisation is a natural part of education, as the geological formations do not follow the boundaries between countries.

The degree programme in Geosciences consists of a 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a 2-year Master’s degree. Teaching is given in four subjects: 1) Geology and Mineralogy, 2) Quaternary Geology, 3) Geochemistry, and 4) Geophysics. More information on the studies of Geosciences is found on the homepages of Oulu Mining School.
