5-6 Year Degree Programmes

Degree Programme in German Philology

Studies in German philology concentrate on achieving profound language skills and on the understanding and research of the German language and literature and culture of the German-speaking countries. As the studies progress, students can specialize in second language teaching, international business communication, literature and cultural studies.

Studies in the subject consist of focus areas, some of which are linguistics, translation, literature, culture and intercultural communication. In addition, it is possible to pursue a 25 credit point minor subject package in translation. Degree studies also include a period of language training, which can be completed, for instance, by working abroad for two months, taking a month- long language course, or studying in a German-speaking country for the duration of an academic term/year. On a yearly basis, students are offered stipends for language courses or studies abroad. The subject of German philology has partner universities, for instance, in Germany, Austria and France. Exchange studies completed abroad can be fully included in a degree in German philology, which means that exchange studies advance degree studies as well.

In subject teacher education, another language subject is commonly chosen as a minor subject. Subject teacher education also includes compulsory pedagogical studies. All the other students have more freedom in their studies and they should choose their minor subjects with respect to their future occupations. Studies in tourism and economics make for excellent minor subjects. Tutor teachers help every student to make a personal study plan.

A degree in German philology offers good working prospects as teachers or experts in German language and culture in regional or international companies. Because the German-speaking economic zone is of great significance to the Finnish export industry, trained specialists and cultural consults who can support administrators will be holding key positions in the future. As an answer to the need for this kind of training, a study package in international business communication has been developed in German philology and the package can be selected as a field of specialisation.
