Studies at University of Oulu 2016-2017

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

International Master's Programmes

Environmental Engineering, Master of Science (Technology), 120 ECTS

Profile of the Degree:

The graduates of the BEE programme will have scientific approach to environmental protection and management of natural resources, and skills and knowledge for both scientific and applied work in industry and academia as environmental engineers. Apart from their know-how for technologies, processes, and management, the BEE graduates will also be able to raise awareness about sustainable development internationally.

Courses Required for the Degree:

The MSc (Technology) Degree in Environmental Engineering (120 ECTS) consists of 90 ECTS of courses in one Basic Module common for both study options, an Advanced Module of the chosen study option, either Clean Production or Water and Environment, and the Master's Thesis (30 ECTS).

Further information: See course structure diagram.

Learning Outcomes:

Currently the BEE programme includes two available majors, ir study options, which are 'Clean Production', and 'Water & Environment'.

The Clean Production (CP) option includes studies focused on reducing the environmental load of industry, and provides knowledge on how to manage environmental issues within the industry by application of proper methods, tools and technologies.

After completing the studies on clean production, the student will have a view of the northern environment and beyond, and of the environmental and socio-economic characteristics therein. He/she will understand the multidisciplinary nature of global change and sustainable development, and can apply this knowhow to different areas of industrial production. Further, the student will be able to recognize causes for industrial environmental load and will know the tools for industrial ecology, and can apply them in industry. He/she understands the interactions existing between industrial, biological and socio-economic systems. He/she can apply different methods, tools and technologies into management of environmental loads and handling other environmental issues in industry.

The Water & Environment (WE) option includes studies on protection and restoration of the natural environment, remediations against water and soil pollution, and water and waste water treatment and waste technologies.

After completing the studies on water and environmental issues, the student will have a view of the northern environment and beyond, and of the environmental and socio-economic characteristics therein. He/she will understand the multidisciplinary nature of global change and sustainable development and can apply this knowhow to environmental and water engineering. Further, the student will know the methods for water and waste water treatment, and can successfully conduct scientic field work in environmental engineering. The student also understands the natural phenomena and processes related to water resources. The student will recognize the causes of environmental loads, and can apply different methods, tools and technologies in controlling and reducing harmful environmental effects.

Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning:

The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

More information: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Modes of Study and Teaching:

The BEE studies are carried out within two academic study years, each year corresponding to 60 ECTS. This equals 1600 hours of student workload per academic year (Sep-Dec, Jan-May), and the full degree will be 120 ECTS. The studies include an obligatory course called Advanced Practical Training (5 ECTS = 2 months of training and a seminar) completed during the summer months between the two study years (June-Aug). The studies are full-time studies mainly composed of day-time (8-18) and working-week (Mon-Fri) contact learning (e.g., lectures, practicals, group and project work, book essays, expert seminars and exercises, etc.), and additional e-learning and self-studying during evenings / weekends.

Language of Instruction:

The degree is fully completed in English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading:

The degree-related studies can be completed based on the BEE curriculum.

Assessment methods and criteria for the studies: Study unit descriptions give more exact information on the assessment of study units (courses). Master’s Thesis and a Maturity Test shall be written as the final work in the degree. A Personal Study Plan PSP is compiled for each student, considering student’s prior learning and work experience.

Grading: A numerical scale 0-5 in whole numbers or verbal grading Pass or Fail is used in assessing a completed course. In determining the final grade for a study module, a credit-weighted average is utilized. The grades of the Master’s Thesis shall not be considered when determining the average of advanced studies.

Separate provisions have been laid down for assessing the proficiency in Finnish and Swedish language required in accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004) - Maturity Test. BEE students will write their Maturity Test in English.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates:

After graduation, a BEE student can work as an independent professional in the different fields of environmental engineering, e.g., in administrative and managerial positions, education, development, planning and research. BEE graduates will enter job markets as experts in environmental engineering with perspective in and skills to understanding international contexts of environmental issues. The graduates can work in different environment related business sectors, in local and regional public administration, as well as environmental authorities or research institutes, not only within the region, but also in international tasks.

Access to Further Studies:

A Master of Science in Technology graduate from the BEE programme is eligible to apply for doctoral studies.

Graduation Requirements and Final Project:

To be awarded a master's degree, a student must complete all of the required studies and the master's thesis project, and to write a Maturity Test, an essay demonstrating language proficiency in the language in which the student has been educated (Finnish or Swedish; an international student graduating from an international master's programme will write the essay in English). With the essay (the student shall demonstrate satisfactory level of proficiency in Finnish or Swedish required in the Act (424/2003) section 6, subsection 1) and also his/her knowledge in, and ability to write scientific papers scholarly, in his/her area of experties (a student who has already demonstrated his/her language proficiency for a lower university degree (Bachelor) does not need to demonstrate it again for a master´s degree). The certificate for the Degree of Master of Science (Technology) is awarded on request and issued by the Education Dean of the Faculty.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations:

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

An MSc (tech) degree in engineering gives access to doctoral studies and a variety of positions in the field. Students can influence their degree through their preferred selections and best suited training positions.
