With continuously tightening restrictions by European authorities (regarding travelling and public gatherings) the organizers do not wish to put guests under threat of long quarantines or, worse, being exposed to the virus. Especially due to the unique nature of the event, by combining people from around the world, ice cold water, hot tubs and sauna, any risks with creating grounds for coronavirus contamination cannot be taken.
The university of Oulu published new instructions to restrict the spreading of coronavirus. According to the new instructions, staff and students should not travel to epidemic area nor take visitors from these areas and consider all travelling.
All tickets will be refunded. All ticket holders will be informed about the refunding details as soon as possible. The organizers of Polar Bear Pitching are looking into how the event could be held in a virtual form.
Please note, that the side events Virtual Reality Nordic and Oulu Race of Drones will be held as planned, as they do not possess the physically challenging nature of Polar Bear Pitching.
Obviously, the organizers are devastated by this turn of events, but the safety and health of guests is the first priority. The organizers want to take responsibility in preventing epidemic from spreading and hope everyone understands and respects the difficult decision.
Polar Bear Pitching is an internationally recognized startup competition held yearly in Oulu, Finland where startups compete by pitching in an ice hole carved in the frozen Baltic Ocean. The event was planned to take place on the 12th of March.
