How to represent your culture at Festival of Cultures

Practicalities and useful information for the 2020 event!

This year, the Festival of Cultures* is organized at our University for the fifth time. The event will happen on week 47 (November 16-20). To make the event fit into the present times and to avoid canceling it altogether because of the COVID-19 related restrictions, Festival of Cultures 2020 will be organized in a completely new way. Most of the Festival of Cultures events, performances, and workshops will be happening online, but we are confident the Festival won’t lose its spirit and value it’s known for thanks to your participation. We will make sure all of you who will be representing your cultures will get all the help in preparing for the Festival which is needed.

So, what's different this year? Obviously, there will be no country stall area at the campus during the event, which means you won't have to spend a lot of time decorating and/or cooking food and snacks for the event. Instead, we will be pre-recording most of the content beforehand in late October and early November, which gives us maximum flexibility with preparations. The great thing about this arrangement is that we will be able to schedule the filming sessions (or whatever else you would choose to organize) in a way that fits your schedule the most.

Not sure how to represent your native culture at the event? It’s entirely up to you and your future team! We will form groups with everyone from your culture who signed up, so you won’t be alone. The theme of this year’s event is “Future Travels”, so the default option is to do a session related to traveling in your country (information about culture, your favorite places to visit, language learning workshop (i.e. the most useful phrases, how to read signs, etc). However, if you will have some other ideas, you are welcome to do an event not tied to the theme (e.g. cooking workshop, dancing class – it’s up to you!). We will discuss all your ideas with you in person and help you with your sessions. We will send you the invitations to book a short 20-minute meeting shortly after the registration period ends, and we promise to provide you with the help and resources to bring your ideas to life.
If filming your session beforehand will be your choice, all your team would need to do is to prepare content for a session, event, or something else, and then just show up for the filming. We will take care of the rest. Please note that if you would want to do the session online during the Festival week instead, we won't have to film your session beforehand.

To the students who are studying remotely from abroad this semester (i.e. who are not in Finland physically): it's possible for you to participate as well! :) Register normally via the registration form, and let us know that you will be joining from abroad in the "comments" section at the bottom of the form. We will need to make some additional arrangements with you, and we will contact you by email separately!

All your event-related expenses of your future team will be covered by us. We will agree on a budget for your team together with you, but you don’t have to worry about that now.

Here's the approximate pre-Festival timeline this year:

  1. Sign up before the 16th of October, 10am! The registration form is here;
  2. We will group you into teams based on the cultures you are representing shortly after the registration period ends (your team will get a separate email from us);
  3. Work within your teams, brainstorm ideas, and book the meeting with us using the link we will provide (16.-19.10);
  4. Meet up with us and share your ideas*. We will help to bring your ideas to life! (19.-21.10);
  5. Show up for the filming of your session**. The dates will be scheduled with you during the meeting and we will make sure the dates fit your schedules. We will begin filming your sessions on 27.10. The last available slots are on 6.11. We will take care of all the video editing and other practicalities, so you don’t have to worry about any of it;
  6. Enjoy the events on week 47 J

Our goal is to make the preparation process as easy and as smooth as possible for you. If you have any questions or something is not clear, please reach out to us: festivalofcultures(at)oulu.fi

* The meetings will be held online via Zoom unless your team requests the face-to-face meeting on campus.

** If your team would wish to do a live session or a workshop during the Festival week, it's possible as well. In that case, your session would not have to be filmed beforehand! We'll discuss this in more detail when we will meet up with you!

Looking forward to meeting you all and making this event happen together with you! J

Once again, the registration form is here, please submit your registration already today :)
